I've always used 4x12's too. regardless of venue size. I like the slants for a bit of upward projection. I just prefer 4x12's at any volume level and have multiple half stacks.

A 2x12 works well for Alan and many others but that might not work for everyone. It's all good!

I use a 100 Watt head and that works fine for me and it cuts the PA like glass but that's also because the amp has a fantastic MV.

It's all about using what works for you. It did throw me that the O/P mentioned stripped down rig but was willing to lug a 4x12 :D

These days there are so many options that it's a great time to be a guitarist

All the best

"Stripped down rig" and 4x12 does seem to be kind of contradictory   My 4x12 is on casters and is reasonably light, so it's not really that difficult to move around. The rack rig on the other hand is a Pig! It's 14U, so it's too short to be conveniently pushed (if it was on casters), it's too heavy and cumbersome for one person to pick up and it's uncomfortable to carry, even for two people. It's worth it, but moving an amp head would sure be a lot easier

Why couldn't you go with a power amp...VHT 2:50:2 (tube) or a Matrix power amp...a preamp or two...or even switch them out
With a pair of 1x12 Ported cubes....

The mini 5153 or used Mark IV is probably your best cheap route.
Spendy side I'd go with a used Einstein, XTC or Shiva. I use a 100 w Einstein >2x12 with the channel one mode mod and the other player in my cover band uses a Shiva 2x12 combo. They both do all styles from pristine clean to hard rock grind in spades. PT-100 is another awesome flexible amp.

As already mentioned above, I picked up a used 5153 for $1200.

Great amp that has a good clean channel that is pedal friendly.
