Pete Thorn quick SL15 clip

I hate Pete Thorn, but his amp sounds great :dunno:

That said, it's already at the highest end of what I would pay for any "lunchbox" or small iron type amp already, so if the new one is 30% more, that's kind of into the ridiculous zone IMO

It would make a lot more sense at 2500$ if it was a 50 watter with some crazy new attenuation or IR system like the PT, but from the sounds of things its just a really nice SL circuit with small bottle power glass.... which, great, but I don't understand what market theyre trying to go for
Agreed 100%. I never go into these things with a new price mentality though, I’m all about wait until it hits the used market. I paid exactly what I’m asking for that PT15 right now and at that price it works, but not at $2900, fuck that.

Re: those pickups, the Thornbuckers actually worked for me being a bit more neutral. I do have a couple of sets of Bare Knuckles I just got to throw in so we’ll see ( Mules & VHII) but I’m leaving the Thornbuckers in the V

In my experience the low wattage amps just will never punch like the big brothers because they can't. The Output transformers don't have the mass like a 50 watt or 100 watt Output transformers which is well known. I pointed this out in numerous threads that Mojave used to install 100 watt Output transformers to get the Scorpion(Peacemaker little brother) to sound as full and punch like the 100 watt Peacemaker and it works awesome. This is why you can pull two tubes on a 100 watt amp and run it at 50 watts but it still punches like a 100 watter. I do this all the time on my 68 plexi and it still punches harder and feels bigger than my 50 watt SL which has the stock Drake 50 watt Output transformer.

I could be wrong but I think Mike Soldano used/uses larger output transformers closer to the size of 50 watts in the HR25 and the SLO30 for that very reason, I think I remember him stating something to that effect in an interview about the HR25 amp.

So I will stick with my 50 was 100 watters because I like the feel and punch of the larger amps.

To get a 15-25 watt amp to punch like a 50 watter the builders would need to use an actual 50 watt output transformer but that would drive up costs.

Maybe one day I will install a larger output transformer in my 5 watt single ended 2203 amp just for kicks.

Yep, that's exactly why the SLO30 and HR25 amps sound so rad

I'm here for you putting some big iron on a 5 watt 2203 for sure though, i'd love to hear clips (for science)
