UPS dropped the amp off at my work today at 10:20AM. I left to go home for an early lunch at 11:00AM and just returned to work. Here are my initial impressions with right at 1 hour of time with the amp. So we can call this an early review.

First I of course wanted to make sure everything worked. Equipment used:

Wizard 2x12 with Rock 20 Speakers
Charval San Dimas and Suhr Standard guitars
Diezel Herbert Head

After making sure all the tubes were seeded and nothing was loose from shipping I turned her on and I got blue lights. LOL, good first start.

I started with Channel 1, Very nice clean sound in a channel switching amp. Not as fender like as the PT100 clean but this clean channel seems like it will do an excellent job. I spent about 10 minutes on this channel so there is a lot more tweaking I can do of course to hear all the variations.

Channel 2: - mode, This actually had less gain than I thought it would, but it sounded very crisp. I always think of ACDC using Marshalls and this seemed like a more crisp Hiwatt type sound with the gain at about noon and the master at about 10oclock. I thought this sounded better to me than a Plexi, very crisp, raw and in your face. I can see where the Marshall guys would not hear the Karrang of a Marshall, but I actually prefer this crispness and mid range content for stuff like ACDC, etc...

Channel 2+ mode, :worship: :rawk:

This channel had more gain that I knew what to do with. No mid cut and it just screamed. I have a Tonefreak Severe I was using with the Wizard and I can see the need for that is now gone LOL. I loved this channel with and without mid cut, almost instant gratification on this channel. Modern crushing tone for days. Also I was amazed that it cleaned up with my volume knob as well as my Wizard did. Peter This channel rocks and you are amazing. Again so much more here for me to learn, but just wow!!

Channel 3, I can see this being a great lead channel for me. It is very compressed and will really let me shred and hide my slop.  In all seriousness a bit too compressed, but with the gain dialed back this may be where I still use a clean boost of some sort to get a singing lead tone. Will need to experiment.

What is amazing is that I run a W/D/W rig and it has always sounded massive and wide. The Herbert by itself sounded massive and wide. I am scared to put it into the W/D/W as I may no longer have a home to live in.

I have a lot to learn about the amp, and first reviews on any amp are always positive. So I am not going to gloat anymore. I will say the Herbert is a beast of its own and so far I like what I hear. I got to test everything but the FX loops and MIDI, but so far everything is working and sounding great!

Awesome!
I am 3 weeks into the VH4 and still getting different tones.
Have to fine tune and tweak.
I am its only going to get better with time......
Congrats!

Dan

That herbert is gonna be stuck in your head like crack cocaine until you get back to her later on after work. Looks like your gonna have to take the day off early somehow!

I will throw some rig pictures up tonight here and in the picture section. Maybe some clips by this weekend. And hopefully some decent live video in the very near future. I play Christian hard rock, so I am sure the Herbert is going to go over well in the youth centers!!

Pillar is actually from my Church, so the Churches around here are used to Splawns. Maybe after Pillar hears my Herbert they will swap to Diezels

BTW, the above comment was not derogatory towards Splawns, they are great amps!!! No negativity meant!!

Congrats, I just got my new Herbert too and I agree with your review. Still finding new tones and nuances I didn't hear before. Plus it's such a nicely made beast...man your church must do some pretty heavy songs to use an amp like the Herbert. Have fun....

We are not the Church band, they are just praise and worship. We play Church events, youth group events, mini concerts and such. We are working on all original stuff, very modern and heavy and the Herbert is going to fit perfectly.

If I played the Herbert in the main service I think there would be HELL to pay!!

Wizards are great amps!! Hope you enjoy it and good luck with everything you do.

Here is a really bad IPhone image of the rig. I will get some good Hi Resolution photos for the main photos section this weekend at practice. Cannot wait to see how things go with the band.

Actually this one has 4 KT88 and 2 6L6's in her. Has more mids than I expected for this combination. I am pretty sure I will be giving 6550s and EL34's a try to find the best mix for me. But she does sound great with this combination so far.

I am using the Ground Control Pro, but any will work with the Diezel, it is super MIDI friendly. Not much to know. If you have other MIDI effects the board will depend on how deep you want to go, how many IA switches you require. Some good ones are the Liquid Foot Pro, All Access, RJM MasterMind and a bunch of others. Again depends on what you need.

Hope you like your Herbert when you get it as much as I am enjoying mine. I put in 5 hours of playing today and tone tweaking. Not sure I like the Parallel loop Send feeding the Wet part of my system. Still thinking of getting a Suhr Line Out box for this, seems using them I can get the levels hotter going into my effects as well as it is after the power section which I seem to prefer in my wet configuration.

Again I am loving this amp!!

Congrats on the herby  The more you play it the more you will find it is an amazing amp. Cool on the christian band to ( everybody will say Holy herbie)        I am trying to put a christian band together myself.
The herbie is one of the biggest sounding amps out there......

:rawk: Welcome Braddah!! Nice to see you in this zone as opposed to the Bog-zone... WELCOME TO THE FAMILY!!! It's so great when we see cool cats having Herbert babies and Einstein babies, and Schmidts and, well, those quirky little weirdo kids named VH4's and all - but ya, they're INCREDIBLE amps. I will eventually own a Herbert - bottom line. I own a VH4S right now and I've had several V's in my session space for 3 years now - and I'm STILL getting new tones from them... They're so responsive to tubes, cabs, guitars, but the main thing is - and this is a MUST - you HAVE to spend some time with the MV at about 1pm, and the channel volume anywhere past 2pm - the amp just starts to BREATH FIRE man!!!!!!!!

I thought I knew what a Diezel sounded like just from studio work. It wasn't until I got it into a space big enough and dampened enough to let 'er loose that I really started to understand "Diezel tone". Sorta like have a 400+hp beautiful Italian sportscar and you're driving it around the subdivision, versus, getting it on a twisting perfect pavement winding mountain/valley road and just punching it to redline. THAT'S MY DIEZEL!!!!!!

Welcome aboard
V.
