Just curious any opinions on this? Do you think youd do that, and why?

I've had the original 120. Twice.
Different transformer versions.
Preferred the ORANGE earlier one.
(It's the one that sent a Randall Satan packing)

Have a Herbert 3. (It was my 1st Diezel)
I have never played a mkII Savage.
I've listened to clips obviously.
I'm a little attached to the 180 watt power section. But I think the savage is more surgical in approach. I don't think I'd do a straight up trade if I did it..

Thoughts? Experiences?

Once you’ve tasted 180W of underwear shaking headroom you’re going to really feel the anemic difference of only two 6550s. Plus Engl build quality is fucking trash so you’ll lose a lot of value not to mention reliability concerns. I wouldn’t even consider it.

2 very different sounding amps. Either you prefer one or the other. The Diezel has a higher build quality and is definitely worth more money. I never really bonded with any of my diezels so I would take the Engl (particularly because I am a sucker for some of the savage tones). But I would only do that trade with cash on top for sure.

Apples vs oranges, but I wouldn’t do that trade. If you want a different high horsepower amp than the Herbert I’d consider instead a coliseum, Megalith Beta, Wizard Hell Razor KT150 or 200 or early Uberschall. All rare and expensive amps, but that’s what it takes IME if you want something better than the Herbert for where it excels (to me at least)

Only with some cash. I'd prefer the herbert. Especially if you play downtuned/extended scale, at that point you'd have to be insane.

Engls do sound good though, and if the savage is your be-all end all, sure i guess.

If you've already owned a savage then just...why?

You know...which one sounds better to you?

Forget value, forget build quality - which one sounds better to you. Ultimately regardless of the price of the amp or the build quality if you don't dig it, you're never going to dig it. I dumped a 4k Mezzabarba Trinity because regardless of the quality and it was off the hook, maybe the best of all the amps I have ever owned, it was a work of art but I couldn't dial in shit that I liked. I did everything to keep that amp but ultimately I didn't dig the tone. In fact speaking of Engl, at the time I had also flipped a Artist and "to me", my opinion only...the Artist dusted it.

Which one sounds better to you - that's my take.

Don't do it.
I owned a Savage 120 Mk2, and although Channel 1 (Clean) and Channel 4 (Lead) are excellent,
Channels 2 & 3 are a mystery, and basically useless.

Every channel of the Herbert is excellent.
Keep the Herbert.

I sold my Savage Mk2, and got a VH4, and I couldn't be happier.

I agree on this . Though I have an old Engl that enjoy when we need a more processed tone . I like it at times

is this still a thing?
No. These are old stories repeated over and over again. Engl improved the design over the years. It corresponds to the nowadays standard of PCB based amplifiers. I've had enough of them open to say that. In short, technicians are afraid of them for some reason unknown to me and blame them mainly for the unavailability of schematics, parts on the other side of the PCB and the lack of description on the PCB. For me, I'd rather fix Engl than Mesa, Randall, Egnater etc. Engls are mostly based on the same circuit with minor changes between models and one gets into it very quickly.

You know, the allure of it possibly being better or even more capable than the previous versions. Curiosity. Same reason I bought both versions of the silver faced 120 I guess. I do love savages. However, I'm also of the notion that if I were to get another Engl... I'd probably put the new special edition ahead of the newer savage when it really comes down to it. Nevwr played any SE. So there is that.
