Not sure if the Boss DD-20 is overkill for you, but I've been very pleased with it :). Although, I haven't used it in front of an amp only in the loop.....
Thats the double thing, right. I'll have a look Tom, thanks.

A Punk Rocker would need just three of and play a whole song into these 23sec units

I found an old pedal at a yard sale, an Arion DDS-4. I'm not a pedal geek, so I had no clue what I was getting for $5.00, but this thing is awesome! I use it on cleans only up front, it's a sampler, I'll have to see how long it loops for. I haven't done the sample/loop thing with it, but it works great as a delay.

The older Arion stuff is cool (not an expert either).

5$ - LOL

I'm real picky about delay and finally settled for the Deluxe Memory Man. I get very lush delay/chorus and its built to last. Kinda big and not real cheap are the downsides to it.

I'm with Dan.....no delay in front for me. :) I'm looking at either the Eventide or new Memory Man myself. :) Right now I have a DD3 on my main board thru the loop and a Digidelay on my smaller board. I use the smaller board in front of amps set clean with a distortion pedal in front of it. It works pretty well for that....

5 bucks FTW.  You can't even get a Quiznoss sub for 5 bucks anymore.

Check out the new MXR Carbon Copy, I believe it has 600ms of delay and it only cost about $149.00.
I have only heard clips on the sight, but have heard good reviews.

Well, I also sometime reach down and do some sound effects with it if I'm in a crazy mood.

My wife likes for me to do that sometimes. Makes her laugh. :D

The Ibanez DE-7 gets good reviews and is cheap. I have it's predecessor, the Echomachine. It's decent. Just a basic analog-sounding delay. It's no echoplex but it's cool for not much $.

one man's cold/sterile/digital is another man's "not-shitty, not-muddy, etc"

I say DD-3
I used the DD3 for years, mang. In comparison to an AD-9 it does sound a bit colder and hi fi, while the maxon sounds warmer and lower fi. I wouldnt call neither muddy... Which is sort of a moot point when you run it front of an amp, because any delay will add a bit of mud if you're using too much gain. I wasnt slagging it though, I think the DD-3 is a great pedal. In an FX loop it sounds phenomenal IMO. I like it in an FX loop better than in front of an amp. I just think when you're running delay in front, analog or tape echo is where its at. :)

Olaf, the new Maxon Ad-9 has a 450ms, even more than mine!!! Its even got a tape echo simulator! I want this pedal bad:

The whole argument is moot for me.

I've never used delay out front, and I probably never will.

2290 after preamp for me. ;)

Marshall Echohead.
Digital, 7 modes, true bypass. Sounds great though the effects loop. Has a second output jack that allows for a natural decay when the pedal is switched off, instead of the usual abrubt end to the effect.
Decent price too.

Those Marshall delay and reverb effects do sound quite decent indeed. But are they really true bypass?

MXR Carbon Copy is an affordable analog delay too... It seems to be selling rather well. I'm interested in it for the same reason, thickening solos in a reverb sort of way. But... must... save... up... for... new... amp... first...

I'm sure the Nova pedals are nice too, though. In fact, once I've got some money, I'd like to run an analog delay like the MXR for thickening up the sound in slow solos, and a Nova delay (or that new Nova System) as a "real" delay when I need it.

Delays might sound better in the loop, though... At least, that's my experience.

That one sounds really interesting, I've been thinking about buying one myself.

Thanks everybody. Thats a lot of suggestions . . . I have to read/search a bit now . . .

I use a MIJ Ibanez AD-9 in front of my Superbass, doesnt add noise and souds extremely w3arm and smooth. Its really only useful for slap back but thats all I need it for. Run it after a fuzz and its like EJ bliss. :D

The Maxon reissues are awesome but they are expensive.

A Boss DD-3 sounds pretty good in front of an amp too, but its a lot colder/digital sounding compared to an analog delay.

i had a AD-9 re-issue at one point, my only complaint was i wish it would've had just a little more delay time. i loved the sound of it though.

i was thinking of picking up a cheap delay, does anyone have any opinons on the behringer knock off of the boss delay?

Here's a DMM demo > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fosr3B0p ... re=related

Like I said, though, the size of the pedal is a pretty big turnoff to alot of folks. It also runs on 24v I think? I had to get a special cable from Voodoo Lab to use it with my Pedal Power 2+.
I love my DMM. They actually have a new one coming out with a smaller footprint. Not Boss small, but smaller nonetheless. It uses the small chip too, so the same tone should remain intact.

Thanks for the link, Chris. The DMM sounds nice, the MXR sounds nice as well, of course with less features . . .
