What does a good fender cost? If less costly than the others mentioned, you could get one for the cleans then hit it with a 5153 pedal for the OD/gain. Obviously wouldn't be as Sexy as Mesa, Archhon, etc. but it may fit your budget better. :dunno:

I'd check out a Rivera Fandango or ENGL Steve Morse.

While the ENGL isn't USA built, it's one of the best around for gorgeous cleans, and awesome and versatile high-gain.

My Fryette Sig:X, while nice, doesn't have that ENGL Morse/Invader awesome clean quality. It's more Hiwatt/Matchless in cleans, than Fender, described with broad strokes of course.

The EVH 5150III can do a great clean, but then the blue channel suffers and you have to deal with a huge volume jump. Were you to use it purely as a 2 channel head, then yes, it works great. PRS Archon's cleans might even be better. Archon's gain vs EVH's gain is more Mesa vs. souped up Marshall/SLO, imo.

Diamond Heretic If your located anywhere near N. Texas your welcome to come listen/try mine. Have a 5881 and a el34 platform and both of them crush. Pairs nicely with the uberschall my other guitar player uses. I have to keep it eq'd very tame to not drown him out actually.

Rivera is a pretty good idea actually. Everybody always forgets about them, but they are good amps. Bognor is in the Marshall camp, and OP said he didn't want that. As is Fryette. I'm talking about the "sound" here. But Rivera is a little different. Closer to Mesa maybe, in terms of tone. Here's the Knucklehead Tre, which has a pretty stellar Fender-esque clean channel as well.

Diezel Fokker? Can be had for great prices on the used market.

I'm not the baddest guitarist in the world, but here's a vid of me comparing my Uberschall, Krankenstein, & 5150 II with some heavy riffage.

I highly recommend you check out an EVH 5150 III 100W. I have been getting mad boners over the used one I just got... I mean wow. I have a Rev F and it's an awesome amp... but I am just blown away over this amp... don't get it confused with a Peavey because they are not even close.
