Recording with the Egnater?

I don't have any room right now in our place for a speaker box so the Palmer PDI-09 or 03 would have to do the trick. I guess with this I would not need to crank the amp.

the pdi-09 is NOT a load box.. you need a speaker on it.

Sounds like the cheapest way for me to go is the mic eliminator and if that does not give satisfactory results, I'll try an attenuater, like a hot plate. My 16 track unit does not have a noise gate however which could be an issue.

The Palmer PGA-04 is a load box and a tweakable mic eliminator in one. You can go from open back 2x10 to closed back 4x12 sounds. In the clips I linked above I used the PGA-04 on load (no speaker) directly into my FirePod.

I also have a PDI-09 mounted to the back of my Mod50 tube protector that I use live for consistancy.

Either the PGA-04 or a HotPlate and PDI-09 or H&K Red Box or other mic sim.

Wow that Palmer PGA-04 is $650. If it is a power soak also what keeps it from heating up like a power soak/ attenuator. One would think that if it is in one space it would put off alot of heat. The power soaking units i have seen have fins for cooling. I dont know much about them so forgive me if I am way off, Just asking.

Eric how much sound bleeds out of the Grendel? If any.

No isolation cabinet is 100% quiet. It drops about 36-40dB of tone. I can crank my amp at 3am and my wife / daughter are sleeping upstairs no problem. Although, I don't crank my amp SUPER SUPER loud because you just don't need to w/ the Mod50 / VHT 2/90/2 setup.

The isolation cab you have Eric is a good idea man. I have to think about this!

I just talked to a friend who has a homer studio...

Well, I am in a tough spot because I don't have the space right now for the isolation cab you have....but I MIGHT be able to so can I get back to you? The other thing is effects. I would still need decent effects unless I use the built in effects from my console.

Wish there was a way to run it out of the mic eliminator without noise.

There is a way...Run a power soak. Or just buy a Palmer PDI-03. The best speaker emulator on the market IMHO.

I record with the "mic eliminator" direct into my roland 16/24 studio and get great tone at low volumes. I have been very impressed doing it this way. I would like a Grendel Cab so I could crank the amp and get more tube break up .

Any noise issues that way?

What do you use for effects? It would be nice to record a real amp, not a simulation.

Noise as in...noise in the room? nope...It's a load box and you just run a direct out to the console. As far as tone is concerned...you like Joe Satriani's tone on his self-titled album???? He was using one of those. EVH used them a lot live...Geddy Lee uses a different palmer for his bass tone. Guitar -> Avalon DI -> Sansamp RBI -> Palmer for geddy's tone.

They are tried and true man.

It records direct with out any noise. Any effects I use through the head/amp (mostly the TC G sys.) come through the speaker is recorded the way it sounds in the cab. Did that make sense?

I think his comment was noise in the room...meaning he wished the mic eliminator could be a "silent recording" option. At least that is the assumption i had from him. Which is why something like a load box (like a PDI-03) or a isolation cab is of interest to rich.

I could be wrong though :)

Would be cool if there was a unit to bolt in the bottom of the speaker cab and run the mic eliminator into it the have a switch from Mic Elim into speaker or load box. Compact all in one unit.

The noise I was referring to was more amp(high gain) his, etc. Then again, if I use my effects and noise suppressor, that may not be an issue. I'd have to just try it! Would be nice to record with a real amp. I think the Mod 50 sounds much better cranked although sounds are good at low volume. Just not quite the same as a cranked amp tone and I think that is where a load box or hot plate something comes in handy because you can crank the amp. I still won't rule out a modeller of some sort.

Eric, did you think I was talking about the Palmer? I was referring to the Mic Elim. direct to the console for recording.

Lots to think about.

Modeler...that word is blasphemy!!! HAHAHAH :)

I thought you were meaning noise in the room because of living in an apartment. Still...with a Mic Eliminator or a Palmer....what goes out the back of the amp from the speaker outs is what is getting sent to your console. If you have hiss, it's going to reproduce that hiss....if you have a decimator or a noise gate of some sort...then you are fine.

I thikn the issue with the mic eliminator is the volume. I would still have to have my cab hooked up so I couldn't do silent recording. There are times when I am recording at night and I can't really have anything other than a whisper. The Palmer or your Grendel Dead Room would solve this. I think with a little modeller, like an actual amp I could kill two birds with one stone and have something for writing sessions. There are times we get together and write and a little amp like that would be nice.

which this is why I figured you would be better off w/ a palmer or a dead room. You don't want a modeler...you don't want a modeler!

Eric :)
