Reverb requiring Photo ID on file for sellers as of January 2025?

I believe that was @stratjacket

It didn't pan out sadly but he gave it due diligence :dunno:

The more I hear about Reverb the more I wish allofcraigs was still a thing
Yep, that was me. It was starting to work a little bit, had several hundred listings but I had to make a choice to go all-in or stick with my job and support the family. So I took my losses (it was a lot) and threw in the towel.

It would have taken a major balancing act and I probably should have tried to get some investors but then that could have turned into the very thing I was fighting against. I did talk with some retired execs I knew and they thought it was a bad idea to try to go up against Etsy and Amazon. They saw Amazon as a competitor in the space as well, which I suppose is true.

The thing Reverb did that pissed me off enough to try it happened during the lockdowns. When all the mom & pop shops really only had Reverb as a way to sell or go out of business. Reverb raised their fees significantly at the worst time. Just shit on the little guys, man that pissed me off. They had the biggest year of their existence and I guess they saw it as an opportunity cash in even more while shitting on the small family businesses. There was no need to raise fees at that time, could have waited until lockdowns were over.

It’s the latter for me. The owner is Etsy. I’m not giving Etsy my social and my photo ID just for them to apologize, after making themselves a target for a data breach, by offering one month free credit monitoring in an email. There’s just insane risk to store that information together online and I don’t trust fucking Etsy with it.

I’m also sick of the haggling when you’re already losing your ass because of the amount of fees involved. They can kick rocks.

It also attracts an Etsy crowd of people and while I never had an issue on reverb, I did have a close call with a dude complaining about scratchy pots on an amp I sold ages ago with literally thousands on the line and it shipped across the entire USA. I had to explain high temperatures and humidity do things to amps shipped thousands of miles away.

Just sick of the platform and if I’m selling something anywhere, please ask questions up front because outside of shipping damages all sales are final. I’m straight with my gear and always open to fair conversation. I don’t cater to buyers remorse and I’m not a storefront.
Good on you brother. If everyone did exactly this today they would do an about face on the policy tomorrow morning. Even a 20 percent loss of sellers would give them a solid heart check on wanting to continue this stupidity. Salute. Glad I never wasted time trying to sell stuff there...

Brings to my mind the regulation EU is currently pushing which would require all social media platforms and forums to force their users/members from EU to use some sort of identification to log in.

Oh man imagine the amount of dick pics they will receive.
You know when logging companies throw the lumber down a creek to move them faster? That will be their inbox in January.

Has anyone had any of these companies withhold funds unless you give them ID, SS, etc.? Had that happen with eBay and now I don't trust any of them. I sell small stuff on reverb and don't sweat it but haven't been asked for anything yet.

Eventually some independent third party like Experian, who already has all your information, will become a go between and provide you with a user number they created in house. The push back and lost sales will force such a mechanism to become the norm, I’d venture 3-5 years until a reality.

I hear you. When I list something, absolutely anything that I think would give pause to a total OCD person, I mention. My goal is that there will be absolutely no ammunition to return “not as described”. I take no returns and if it turns up funky, you better give me video and photos and I’ll file a shipping claim. The slightest ding, wearing of hardware, anything that slightly creaks or doesn’t shine gets mentioned. Sometimes people will really sideswipe you with the most incredible, minutia complaint on cheap gear.
…..so far no attempts at returns.

Yep. I sold off a ton of shit on reverb this year. Kept getting a notice that they needed my social so they could 1099 me. I ignored it until my LAST guitar I was unloading about a month ago and they withheld the funds until I caved. Won't be selling there anymore.

I don't think it's legal but obviously it's likely not worth hiring an attorney over. With eBay they were saying it was "for my protection." I'm like dude, I've been selling shit here for like 20 years. After requesting a check made to my name and address, I just left my 90 bucks or whatever with eBay and they are going to let it go to the state as "unclaimed property" (which is also bullshit). Maybe the state governments will start getting annoyed if enough people do this.

What number did you hit before they started asking?

Think I was around $10k when they withheld the last payout.

Reverb is a great place...for me to snipe from.
It's the only thing they're good for imo.
Been sniping and never buying thru them for years now.
At this point Reverb's true colors are known. if you deal thru Reverb you deserve what you get.

thats how it is if you want to post....ahem...self produced adult content.
to become a "verified model" on porn hub, you need an sn, photo id on file, two step authentication each log in, etc.

Not sure why its not like that for tik tok, X, instagram, facebook, etc. You're supposed to be of a certain age to get them, but all you really have to do is click "ok" after you lie.

i don't see this as a that bad if a thing. i guess i'm just used to entering my shit everywhere nowadays.
you're already wide of for scammers/hackers just having a bank account or credit card with online access.
Health insurance companies get data breached constantly, so do banks, any company that has personal info is a target and always has been.
this is no more risky than everything else about existing on the net in 2024.

just keep an eye on your shit, and you generally won't be a target. If you are, you can handle it right away if you're checking bank accounts daily, and other stuff regularly. I've had like all my personal info on the net since i was 18 and i'm almost 42. in that time, my ebay account got hacked one time, and they took care of everything, got my money back in a day, no sweat. it wasn't even my main account... it was a "dirty" account that i rarely used or checked for a while, which is why it got hacked. just be on top of your shit.

exactly where we're headed imo...want internet access, only if your full credentials have been verified

in the very near future, gone will be the days of the early internet era where you could just be an anonymous individual

Driver's license. Next. Facial recognition. Next. Retinal scan. Next. DNA must be on file. Next. Social credit score above ________ to do business on our site. Final: Must have implanted digital ID card to sell on our platform. Failure to comply will result in a digital alert to your local authorities. Thank you for your total obedience and testosterone free compliance. I'm sorry but you've reached your bandwidth allotment for the current 24 hour time frame....

You'd have to ask @JackBootedThug about that...
