So a Boss GT-8 is good enough for Nuno but not for any of us

I've got this brand new Boss GT-8 sitting in my display case here at work. I can't possibly use a lowly Boss GT-8 for my effect sounds. I'm afraid that I may get athlete's foot or at least a rash if I push buttons on that lowly multi-effect.

- I've got to have a Lexicon PCM-41 for some delays and an absolutely huge 80's chorus
- I've got to have a TC Electronic Stereo Chorus Flanger for other chorus needs.
- I've got to have a vintage Boss CE-2 for other chorus's
- I've got to have a vintage MXR Flanger for other flanges
- I've got to have a vintage ADA Flanger for other flanges
- I've got to have a vintage MXR Phase 90 for my phasing
- I've got to have a Hughes & Kettner Replex for my echoplex type delays
- I've got to have a Maxon AD-900 for my analog delays (not the AD-999 of course, mine is the rare, earlier two chip version)
- I've got to have a Fulltone Clyde wah for my "live" wah needs
- I've got to have a vintage Thomas Organ built Cry baby and it has to have the phasel inductor in it in order to be the "right" vintage wah for my recording needs

And Nuno? Well he just plays bigger shows than I ever played, ripping off cooler licks than I ever played, playing cooler songs than I've ever written to more appreciative fans than I've ever had. And he's getting tones at least as cool as I've ever gotten.

And he is able to do this using a Boss GT-8 for all his effects and a Proco Rat for his boost and plugs these into Marshall DSL's or whatever other Marshall he can get his hands on.

What the hell is wrong with me? What the hell is wrong with you? What the hell is wrong with all of us? We are mental! :D

I use the GT-8 too on occasions when i cant take my big rig, and its great when hooked up to a Clean tube poweramp!!

I have NOT tried the GT-8 but I can say I've never been a Nuno fan and I really don't like his tone.

I used my podxt live into a twin that was available for a couple auditions I did recently. Not ideal, but with some tweaking it can get the job done of course. We could all get by living in a tent and using public transit and eating rice and beans etc. too but its nice not to have to ;) Enjoy your FX, they are nice :D

Yeah, but Nuno supposedly has a bad attitude.

Usually, guys with really nice gear end up being really nice guys.

Or it could just be me.

Here are my thoughts on the matter:

I take great pride in being able to dial in very nice usable tones using average ordinary gear... BUT having also used a GT8 from time to time, and having gotten nice results- I can say with absolute confidence, that it SO FAILS by comparison to what I think those of us with an appreciation for the finer things in life, prefer.

I agree, I AM mental, but I am ok with that- and have decided that I will stop trying to justify my preferences to be acceptable by those, who would cry about my rack stuff and preferences being (lame, 80's, overkill, ridiculous, too expensive, too big, too heavy etc...)

I figure let them live in their happy world, if their GT8's and the likes do it for them. I don't put anyone down for their tastes in tone and don't use what I like to please anyone but ME.

The thing that bugs me more than anyone being able to get where they're going using stuff like a GT8 etc... are those same guys who would launch an attack at me, using what I want to get to where I want to go.

Bottom line is if Nuno used my rig, his tone would be even better , but... whatever.

For the record, I have a GT-8, and I hate it. Hate it! It sounds digital, sterile and downright nasally. I run it through the loop of my Einstein and lately I have been just running the amp dry. Just not worth it.

A GT-8 into an effects loop would be great for delays, reverbs, EQ, volume boosts, tremolo. But other functions like Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Pitch shifter, and other modulation effects would sound like shit. I have a Tonelab LE and i bet i could just plug it into a PA system and get by for just about any gig. But damm, i guess guitar players just need to feel an amp push air.

The delays and verbs ain't bad. Never really experimented with the EQ's, the modulation stuff just killed it for me before I had the desire to try anything else. Anything that is under the "FX1" or "FX2" buttons are horrible. Except for the pedal bend, you can't really screw that one up.

Shut off all the amp sims and stompbox models. Just use the effects like delay and verb in the loop. A band i was in hosted a bunch of open jams and one guy comes up and INSISTED i set my Boogie IIC+ to a clean tone so he could use some Digitech piece of crap as a premap. It sounded like complete and utter shit. I never thought it was possible to make a IIC+ sound that bad.
I told him it sounded like a MetalZone into a JC120.

I've done that, still doesn't sound great. Rather just pawn it and buy a halfway decent multi-fx.

Yeah, i always find that a Chorus or Phaser stompbox into the input sounds soo much better than a multi unit in the loop for thos effects.

I think that 4 cable method allows you to use effects wherever you want. I think Stratotone, Pete, is the expert on that.

I have *never* seen someone that uses a multifx/modeller floor board thingy as their main rig/tone get great tone. I've seen guys that generally use tube amps but have one and know how to dial out what's wrong with them to make it good enough. Usually whenever I see someone with one, I'm like uh oh...

I'm sure there are exceptions, but I haven't run across one yet.

I got the impression that we were mental for preferring stuff like this:

I tell you, a GT8 will NOT get you to where this will. EVER...

It's good enough for me. But I'm a tweaking nut, and that's what I love about those things. I don't go, "OK I WANT TEH BEZT CHORUS EVAR." I go, "OK I WANT TEH WEIRDEST NEW NOIZ EVAR."
