So a Boss GT-8 is good enough for Nuno but not for any of us

Sometimes Pro's just have to be practical and use whatever is available to them wherever they may be at any given moment.

I'm sure their home studio's are just has sniffy

A GT-8 into an effects loop would be great for delays, reverbs, EQ, volume boosts, tremolo. But other functions like Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Pitch shifter, and other modulation effects would sound like shit. I have a Tonelab LE and i bet i could just plug it into a PA system and get by for just about any gig. But damm, i guess guitar players just need to feel an amp push air.

I got the impression that we were mental for preferring stuff like this:

I tell you, a GT8 will NOT get you to where this will. EVER...

Hey, it's official. I'm coming out to Hawaii the first week of March. Do i get to plug into that thing. :D

It's w/ mentoneman in southern California, for a bit. I'm letting him have some fun with it, before I ship it back here. I figure he can use it to jam at church and maybe do some studio tracking. If I have it by the time you come out, then you are most welcome, to noodle to your hearts' content.

It's good enough for me. But I'm a tweaking nut, and that's what I love about those things. I don't go, "OK I WANT TEH BEZT CHORUS EVAR." I go, "OK I WANT TEH WEIRDEST NEW NOIZ EVAR."

Then you'd LOVE one of these:

Didn't Neal Schon do a whole album with a GT-8?

Neal said in an interview that he doesnt use real amps in the studio that much anymore, and mostly uses modellers and other stuff. He used the Boss GT stuff on some of the later Journey CD's and also on Soul Sirkus. He also uses it in his live rig too

I swear, when mentoneman (Pat) and I got to Bradshaw's place to pickup the rig- Bob had it all setup and handed me a strat, w/ my 6100 Marshall plugged in everything set flat at 12 o'clock- I played the 1st chord and Pat and I looked at each other and were floored at how landau (without even trying) it is. I am not talking close, I mean WOW that's IT.

The H8000FW actually has a patch called Tales from the Bulge

6628 Tale From The Bulge 48 2,2
6628 Tale From The Bulge 96 || 2,2
{PRDMCEY}[G](TT) H3000 dual Shift > 2290 TT dynamic dly+pan+duck > 1210 st chrs/flanger > PCM70 Hall. Ext 4,5,6,7
control MIDI switching. Set H8000 wet/dry balance to 100% wet. Delay and verb spill over switching. Tweaked for clean
and lead Landau tones. Set TT switch in the system menu. Summed in, stereo out.

Yeah I hear ya' on the Nuno thing. With me, I only play in my basement now and I guess you start becoming really critical with things like "feel" and tone.

Live, I'm sure I could get by with anything. I used to run my Line6 combo into the board all the time and was getting pretty good sounds I'd say.

Tried a DSL 50 for awhile at home. Good not great I thought; although I hit the cruch channel or clean channel (can't remeber which) that had a nice SRV type tone dialed in, with a Soldano Supercharger GTO and whoa!!! One of the sweetest OD sounds I had ever heard!

I tried to like the Gt-8. Something in my mind tells me that that is all I should need for what I do. It just never clicked for me.

My feeling is, if you have the money and want to chase the tone/feed the gas why not? I mean we could be spending our money on worse stuff right?

With that said, if Nuno wants to use a Gt-8 that's fine with me. While my playing might not ever be better than his, my tone sure as hell will   .

When I saw Nuno on the Pornografitti tour he was using a Boss Multi Effector back then too. I think it was an ME-5 or 6. All of us who worked at guitar shops back then thought those things were cheesy too. I just think he is a Boss multi effector sort of guy. It just strikes me as funny, all the research and buying and selling and turning over gear we do trying to find the right piece of gear while a guy like Nuno is too busy having a career and touring and recording albums to waste his time doing what I do.

I'm not speaking for anyone else or directing this at anyone here. Zach, your rig is your rig and nobody else's business and if it does it for you, that's ALL that matters. I'm just looking at myself here really. I always have this "as soon as I get this piece then I'll be set and I'll start recording my songs and getting some stuff done." But it's always one more piece, or just a different pickup, or tubes or mics or another plug in for my computer. What Nuno is doing is a slap in the face to me and I deserve it. This just applies to me and my thinking. Everyone else is free to do what makes them happy and I have no problem with it.

The BOSS GT-8 is one of the few gear pieces I regret selling. I normally used it as an effects only unit with my Marshall DSLs. If you use the "4 cable method", you can have effects like reverb, delay, and chorus running through the amps effects loop and effects like wah, phaser, and OD running through the amps input. It's VERY versatile and sounded great to me!

I also used it several times at rehearsal using a friends JCM900 SL-X 50-watter for power only (ran into the effects loop return) and his 1960A cab. Sounded pretty good to me. Definitely "good enough" for the average audience member.

When we did those 5-6 shows with the band Firehouse, their guitar player (Bill Leverty) had some killer tone through those massive PA systems. Come to find out, he was using a standard POD w/floorboard and running it through the supplied Marshall SL-X heads for power only (also in the effects loop return) and supplied Marshall 2x12" cabs with Vintage 30s. He mainly used the Soldano patch for his high gain stuff. Let me tell you that you COULD NOT tell it was a POD through that kicking PA system.

Sounded great...

It's been said a million times but Tone is subjective. Part of what makes guitar such a lifelong hobby is that never ending pursuit for "your tone". Some may like the Gt-8, and some may hate it. I just happen to have more exotic, and expensive tastes  ;) .
