So a Boss GT-8 is good enough for Nuno but not for any of us

Yes, I do too. But Nuno has a better tone on his albums than I have ever gotten on my albums. Most of my albums are out of print now unfortunately. Out of print because they were never recorded.

The BOSS GT-8 is one of the few gear pieces I regret selling. I normally used it as an effects only unit with my Marshall DSLs. If you use the "4 cable method", you can have effects like reverb, delay, and chorus running through the amps effects loop and effects like wah, phaser, and OD running through the amps input. It's VERY versatile and sounded great to me!

I also used it several times at rehearsal using a friends JCM900 SL-X 50-watter for power only (ran into the effects loop return) and his 1960A cab. Sounded pretty good to me. Definitely "good enough" for the average audience member.

When we did those 5-6 shows with the band Firehouse, their guitar player (Bill Leverty) had some killer tone through those massive PA systems. Come to find out, he was using a standard POD w/floorboard and running it through the supplied Marshall SL-X heads for power only (also in the effects loop return) and supplied Marshall 2x12" cabs with Vintage 30s. He mainly used the Soldano patch for his high gain stuff. Let me tell you that you COULD NOT tell it was a POD through that kicking PA system.

Sounded great...

I saw Shooting Star, and their guitar player was using a 1x12 Flextone. Had a huge sound.

I've got this brand new Boss GT-8 sitting in my display case here at work. I can't possibly use a lowly Boss GT-8 for my effect sounds. I'm afraid that I may get athlete's foot or at least a rash if I push buttons on that lowly multi-effect.

- I've got to have a Lexicon PCM-41 for some delays and an absolutely huge 80's chorus
- I've got to have a TC Electronic Stereo Chorus Flanger for other chorus needs.
- I've got to have a vintage Boss CE-2 for other chorus's
- I've got to have a vintage MXR Flanger for other flanges
- I've got to have a vintage ADA Flanger for other flanges
- I've got to have a vintage MXR Phase 90 for my phasing
- I've got to have a Hughes & Kettner Replex for my echoplex type delays
- I've got to have a Maxon AD-900 for my analog delays (not the AD-999 of course, mine is the rare, earlier two chip version)
- I've got to have a Fulltone Clyde wah for my "live" wah needs
- I've got to have a vintage Thomas Organ built Cry baby and it has to have the phasel inductor in it in order to be the "right" vintage wah for my recording needs


And Nuno? Well he just plays bigger shows than I ever played, ripping off cooler licks than I ever played, playing cooler songs than I've ever written to more appreciative fans than I've ever had. And he's getting tones at least as cool as I've ever gotten.

And he is able to do this using a Boss GT-8 for all his effects and a Proco Rat for his boost and plugs these into Marshall DSL's or whatever other Marshall he can get his hands on.

What the hell is wrong with me? What the hell is wrong with you? What the hell is wrong with all of us? We are mental!

Curt, you are missing the point here. It doesn't matter how good you sound, how well you play or how successful you've been as a guitarist. The only thing that matters is the total sum you've spent on gear. That is why a Boss GT-8 is not desirable. Please make a note of this...

I hear you. I'm personally trying to find the best "bedroom wanker" tone ever assembled . What I really have a problem with is the kids that can only play open strings getting 25,000 dollar EVH strat replicas, and 30,000 dollars worth of effects and amps. I got to school with a few of those kids, and I just want to slap those spoiled bastards in the heads . I worked an entire summer cleaning bathrooms to buy my Diezel, and those bastards don't do anything but bitch and they get ridiculous stuff. Life is ridiculously unfair.

When I saw Nuno on the Pornografitti tour he was using a Boss Multi Effector back then too. I think it was an ME-5 or 6. All of us who worked at guitar shops back then thought those things were cheesy too. I just think he is a Boss multi effector sort of guy. It just strikes me as funny, all the research and buying and selling and turning over gear we do trying to find the right piece of gear while a guy like Nuno is too busy having a career and touring and recording albums to waste his time doing what I do.

I'm not speaking for anyone else or directing this at anyone here. Zach, your rig is your rig and nobody else's business and if it does it for you, that's ALL that matters. I'm just looking at myself here really. I always have this "as soon as I get this piece then I'll be set and I'll start recording my songs and getting some stuff done." But it's always one more piece, or just a different pickup, or tubes or mics or another plug in for my computer. What Nuno is doing is a slap in the face to me and I deserve it. This just applies to me and my thinking. Everyone else is free to do what makes them happy and I have no problem with it.

I can definitely relate to the everlasting chase for tone, and the devices that produce them, the means to control the equipment that meet the requirements.

I agree that if someone is happy with their gear that- THAT is what really matters to the individual.

Notice I never said my old GT-8 sounded as good as my VHT UltraLead. Only that it was waaaaaaaay acceptable for rehearsals and I'm sure I'd be able to gig with it if I needed to.

I feel the exact same way about the GT-8 Chris.. i could definitly make it work for gigging. Its not as good as my Cameron or Boogie, but its definitly decent sounding and more than useable!

You sound bitter. I hope nobody told you that life was going to be "fair" because as you've observed, it doesn't appear to be that way.
