Some day, my M4 and EG5 will arrive. Then, I'll be able to assemble my rig. And then, I'll be able to participate in these conversations because I'll know what the mods sound like. Can you believe I have 3 Egnater modules sitting in boxes for almost 2 months now. Never seen the light of day. My VHT 2502 is still in the box. My CAA 1x12 cubes, still in the box. My Eminence Governors, still in the box. In fact I got the first of 2 Suhr Modern's I ordered the other day and I've only played it twice so far.

OK, I'm done. :D
 I would've done something drastic by now :D

Personally I didn't really like the XTC to much. Too fizzy for me.

The stock XTC module is too bright (probably why you're thinking it's fizzy) and quite thick...best suited to leads IMO. Can't wait to get my new Pete modded one :D

I dunno it just doesn't have the smoothness I was hoping for.

I'm trading for an ultra anyway.

Though I will say I did like the XTC more in the band mix rather than just by itself.

Mine's not fizzy at all.

I'm using JJ ECC83's though.

I don't find it Fizzy either...I am running stock EH's. Just don't crank the treble. I run mine between 10-11 o'clock typically. I do not like too much high end. The midrange on the XTC is very complex sounding and I dig that about it.

Thanks Guys. I know I'm not digging my EG5. I have 24 hours to return it, unless I sell it off here ;) My favorite amp to this day was an Bogner XTC. I'm going to try my SL2 tonight, and see how close it gets me.

I had a Pete modded XTC and then a Pete modded Plexi side by side with an SL2 in my Mod 50 and I could pretty much nail the tone with the SL2, depending on the channel.

 :dunno: bright switch off, treble at 9 o clock.

I guess I was expecting creamy smooth lead, but it just feels fuzzy with my set up, with or without boost.
I think there are EH tubes. Also running AT7s in my driver, effects, and PI.
Maybe that has something to do with it?
Or maybe mine is cursed because i bought it used in the first place.

Either way, it just doesn't work for me. I really wanted it to but I'm still looking for a new lead module.

AT7's are definitely brighter than an AX7.

I typically set it up like bright switch on/off depending on room, treble @ 10:00-ish. Sovtek tubes throughout all the heads I've used it thru--Mod100, Mod 50 and RM100. So many things conspire to produce the sound you hear --guitar, pickups, strings, pick, speakers, tubes, cables, room, etc......and of course the fact that you're you and I'm me. We sound different ;) . The XTC can sound a bit crass on the high end if aren't careful, but I've found I turn the treble down a lot more the older I get.....

You may want to hold off. Rumor has it Randall have a few new modules coming out. Soldano SLO and an Engl Fireball are a couple of names I've heard floating around.

Hang in there man. Sounds like you have a killer rig lined up. How are you liking the Modern? I have two Standards I wouldnt trade for anything in the world. Johns ears and attention to detail are unparalelled IMO.

May I suggest the UltraLead?
Very Santana-esque smoothness.
I've recommended it to a few guys who said they need creamy smooth leads and all have liked it. I personally love it.
Most guys look right past it because they think it's part of the Ultra, Ultra XL series when in fact it's not in the same sonic category at all.

take care,
Russ

I did, I actually tried A LOT of modules recently.
Ultra Lead being one of them, it was SO close to what I want, ALMOST like 90% there.
Maybe modded it'd work.

I'm keeping my eyes peeled for one, but really hoping they deliver on the SLO. Definitely has the potential to be everything I'm looking for.

If you want the Randall(Pete modded) XTC, just get the Egnater SL2 and EG5 and with those two you can find the XTC tones, especially with the SL2.

No fizzyness here. It does have some sizzle on the top end. Is that what you are hearing? I don't see a power amp in your list of gear in your sig. What are you running it through?

Also, please don't take offense but, if you are running it through a BBE into V30 and 12-75 speakers I could see things getting a little fizzy sounding if it were me listening. Those tend to strongly emphasize some pretty specific requencies that just maybe don't agree with the XTC?

Anyone else pick up a new XTC mod from Pete yet? I will say it is VERY full and thick sounding, very punchy.

Yup, I am amodule whore. Mine has the mid shift option too.....outrageously great lead tone in both positions but the slightly scoopier second position improved the XTC as a rhythm channel a *lot*

FWIW I have no use for the lower gain side of it but it does do clean to crunch...I am a gain whore tho' ;)

JKD, how would the new mod from Pete work in a MOD 50? I use the same module for rhythm and lead and just use a boost for leads....so can you EQ for good rhythm and lead at the same time like the SL2?

It works like a single channel module...should ne just plug and play.

Pretty much...I EQ to my guitar and then step on a (OD) pedal if I have to....with the voicing in the mid-shift position, I think it's a nice balance between rhythm and lead...and with the new gain boost..crap there's enough gain at 9 o'clock..lol :D

The XTC is too flubby for tight rhythm so I think rather than the mid shift I would want a tight shift!

Oh..I put a 0.001uF Orange Drop in c3, in place of the 0.0022 ... the low mid voicing and high mid content of the XTC gives it more than enough 'whomp'

So those cap changes you made were in addition to Pete's mods? Did it tighten it up? Effect the tone otherwise?

I played a Pete modded XTC (not new one) and the bass was real flappy/flubby. Playing somehting like Alice in Chain's Them Bones sounded weird during the heavy palm mutes. XTC seemed better for big chords that ring out and leads. I need to see if he can add a tight switch. I can't see me needing the mid shift.
