The XTC is too flubby for tight rhythm so I think rather than the mid shift I would want a tight shift!

Oh..I put a 0.001uF Orange Drop in c3, in place of the 0.0022 ... the low mid voicing and high mid content of the XTC gives it more than enough 'whomp'

So those cap changes you made were in addition to Pete's mods? Did it tighten it up? Effect the tone otherwise?

I played a Pete modded XTC (not new one) and the bass was real flappy/flubby. Playing somehting like Alice in Chain's Them Bones sounded weird during the heavy palm mutes. XTC seemed better for big chords that ring out and leads. I need to see if he can add a tight switch. I can't see me needing the mid shift.

Ask Pete what the mid-shift does before you dismiss it..I think it'll get you where you want to go.

You could just opt for one gain level, a tight switch and the mid-shift :D

The original XTC sounds flubby with the stock value of 0.0022, Pete's mods for clarity help it hold together better, especially as he upped the gain..but still too much Bass for me.

I prefer a lower c3 value and then I can crank the Bass if I need to...seems easier to balance with big, thick sounding guitars...like say my Mahogany Gothic Explorer and LP.

JKD,

So you changed a cap to tighten it up - I may try that if I get one! I don't know if I would need a mid shift because like lots of mids so I can EQ for both rhythm and lead. You mention it was good for both or a nice compromise in the mid shift position - is that the more mids slot?

I think I would still want Pete to do me a mod with the gain switch and a tight switch to switch between two caps.

Guys, what is the Friedman Vox like? I think I'd rather have the two channels of the Egnater Vx.

You can get the SL2 sounding almost exactly like the modded XTC. :)

I can't compare it to the friedman, but if I had to chose just one, I think the vx would be my desert island module, it's incredible! (I haven't tried the Bman, which sounds like it'd be really cool/versatile too). I couldn't imaging having the vx without both channels, they're both fricken fantastic. What surprised me is how much gain and how full channel B is. The vx changes character dramatically with pickup change and reacts incredible well to volume knob/pick up dynamics. I'm sure friedman does incredible work, but IMO, you can't go wrong with the egnater vx. I like it so much I could honestly see having 2 of these down the line.

Actually, I think if the EG3/4 had more gain, it'd be a lot closer than the SL2.

Yea, the Eggie Vox is on my short list! I just wonder which has the better clean channel A - COD or Vox? Anyone?

Good call, the EG3/4 would be really close with more gain....but the SL2 and EG3/4 have more than enough gain for me so I am all set. ;)

The vx can stay clean but I've never thought of vox clean tone as being squeeky clean, as it usually has some little bit of very pleasing break up. It's not the same as a deluxe clean on the verge of break up; it definitely has a unique character, think more stringiness and/or chime. That might be better saved for another thread for another thread on clean tone, since you'll get more responses from people who've tried more of the modules out, and that way i don't want to get off topic bikerdude's topic!

The new Pete modded XTC sounds like a better version of the Egnater MHG. The EG5 I thought was a significant difference from the MHG so I can't compare. Some claim Egnaters are smoother, warmer but I think Pete's modules hold their own well.

This is true...Pete xtc is great- super lead tones- but a bass cap switch would be an excellent idea if you wanted the versatility to go to Them Bones. May not be necessary, as the xtc is my go to solo mod and I'll use other mods for tight crunch anyway

Don't dismiss the mid shift, very cool feature
