It really depends what sound you're after. I have M75s and have also mixed them with H75s; won't ever use anything else.

Yep...I am going all Scumback

Original XTC was voiced with V30s and a strat too if I remember correctly.

Are most of you finding it best to mix the V30 with another speaker such as the G12-65, CL-80 or G12T-75 for more variety and a deeper tone?

I do. I like to mix them with another speaker to tame down the high mid spike the 30's add. The spike allows them to cut great but sometimes a quad is overkill. Sort of the same way with EVM12l's. I mix those to cut down the hifi they give. I like it but a quad is too much. I look for another speaker that fills a void the 30's have. Some more lower mids. The amp's voicing and cabinet plays a big part as well.

I am trying the V30/CL80 and V30/T75 mix.

I use Bogner SHiva and Mesa Boogies

Noice!!! Send the deets Brethren...

Mojo

Did some speaker rolling this past week......

Favorites with the Bogner and my Mesas:
V30/V30
K-100/K-100
V30/CL-80 (GREAT)
K-100/C-90

I've done a lot of chopping and changing with my Shiva anniversary with KT88's and use a 3/4 closed OS Bogner 2x12 and have found the best for me are 2xCL80's I tried 2xV30's 1xV30 and 1xCL80, a Scumback m75 with a V30 and a CL80. I have a Cornford 4x12 with 4xV30's which sounds great too and a Shiva 1x12 with a scumback m75 which is quite nice.

2 Classic Lead 80s sound great with the Bogne Shiva but I am liking the mix with the V30! V30/T75 also sounds killer as does V30/G12-65!

Pre-Rola GB in the top and a very well gig's V30 in the bottom.....They haven't cried like this in a LONG time!!!!

O2Singelcut, a GB and V30 is great....for a little more power handling a V30 and G12-65 kicks too!
You don't often hear of people using GBs with V30s. It can be nice because you get the compression and loose, wody feel with the tightness.

I had a 65 in a JCM800 1x12 combo that I gig'd for years.I was talking with Pat Travers about it and he said to put a Greenback in it. I laughed and said ya right and watch it blow up. He said BS and that he'd put 2 100 watt Marshalls thru his 100 watt cabs for years touring that were "dimed" and never blew one. A couple weeks later a box with a pre-rola GB showed up on my doorstep with a note inside " Just try to blow it!!" I used it in my 800 for years and also in a Yamaha/Soldano T-50 and it sounded amazing without any problems.I put it in the SoulTone 2X12 with a well gig'd (15 years)V30 when I started doing bigger gigs and wanted to push more air. I've been using my old K-55 Rivera Knucklehead and it sounds great, but the Bogner makes them cry like my ears want to hear. I'm really happy so far!!!

02Singlecut,

Do you think the GBs are similar to the G12H-65? I am tempted to replace one of my CL-80s with a G12-65(did a while back) or Lynchback to pair with the V30. Right now I tend to prefer the thicker, warmer tones from the higher output speakers....except K-100s which I find too bassy and stiff at times.

Fav's are:
V30/T75
V30/CL80
V30/G12-65
V30/Lynchback (maybe)

You think lower wattage speakers compress more, have sag, more forgiving, and are easier to play as a result?
I tend to think lower wattage speakers are brighter and I always liked the thicker, warmer, smoother aspect of higher wattage speakers like V30s, CL-80s, etc.......but maybe I have been wrong all along.
Maybe a V30/G12H-30 really is the ultimate combination.

<<<<Yep
Well Pat told me that all the high watts speakers are great if you're diming everything all the time. I can't get away with those types of volumes in the venues I play and with FOH systems the power amp sections really aren't working too hard wattage wise.

02Singlecut,

What is your music style????

I play classic hard rock to modern hard rock and need the lows to be tight enough while retaining that Greenback flavor. Been thinking of the Celestion Lynchbacks
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYGcIwexObw

or...Splawn Small Blocks...basically higher powered Greenbacks....50 watters.

We keep volumes low to medium as well and I use 50 watt amps, maybe I should investigate Greenbacks more or Lynchbacks or Splawns or other high powered GB speakers. In a 412, GBs can be pretty tight if using a 50 watt head, which I do!

Maybe I will try GBs in my 412 and Lynchbacks in my 212s!

Although you have me considering the GB/V30 mix again! LOL.... V30/G12H-30 is good too. V30s have tons of mids though!

How about Scumbacks? Heard this comparison?

Lots of good info in here, I am a bit unsure what my best options are for my 2x12 so maybe you guys can advise me.

I have a closed back orange 2x12 loaded with G12-65's, great speakers but compared to my v30/g12h loaded 4x12 they don't sound as good with the 20th XTC.

I am def gonna go for a V30 but not sure if I should pair it up with another V30, a g12h, a greeny or one of the g12-65's. I play rock / hard rock in a covers band.

Also, has anyone directly compared the orange with the boger os 2x12, how big is the difference, I may be able to go for the bogner if I unload some stuff but if the difference is not massive I will just go for the speaker swap.

cheers

My best all around for my Bogner 212 is V30/T75 - perfectly balanced and good from clean to classic rock to pop to metal.
V30/G12H-30 is good but too ratty and harsh to me, V30/75 is much smoother.
g12-65's were way too mellow for me and sounded dull with the band so I moved on.
CL-80s can also be somewhat mellow.

I find Greenbacks and G12H-30s work better with old Marshall amps, especially non master heads. Going forward I will stick to V30s, T75s, CL80s, and maybe Lynchbacks.

One thing I have learned is that if I want a cab going forward, it will be an Avatar, they are every bit as good as my Bogner 212.
