Here is an easy to play arpeggio, based on a swept arpeggio Ralph was cracking up after playing it like a blur. I extended it a little bit. I have it sometimes at 64th notes/54 beats per minute... my goal is 60 bpm. Sorry about the fingering pattern at the bottom of the tab not matching up. I have it in powertab (now attached) with the picking pattern I use if ya want to have a chuckle yourself:

Gtr I (E A D G B E) - '64th Note A minor arpeggio'

Q=54
2/4
Gtr I

Duration Legend
---------------
Q - quarter; X - 64th;
Uncapitalized letters represent notes that are staccato (1/2 duration)
Irregular groupings are notated above the duration line
Duration letters will always appear directly above the note/fret number it represents the
duration for. Duration letters with no fret number below them represent rests. Multi-
bar rests are notated in the form Wxn, where n is the number of bars to rest for. Low
melody durations appear below the staff

Tempo markers - <E/E./Q/Q./H/H.> = BPM(8/16=s8/s16), where s8 = swing 8ths, s16 = swing 16ths

hmm... Ralph want to help with this one? I'm not sure which one of the 650,000 Ralphisms, Scott means

I have one of my own based on one of both of your teacher's swept licks which is decently terrifying to borrow a Paul Gilbert phrase.

Kage's 2 note per string pentatonic scale runs are also TERRIFYING! He does them faster than I can do 3 notes per string I think

Ivan!

getting to jam with you guys really makes me want to knuckle down and start practicing again. Its just a great time hanging with you guys and its inspiting. I loved the sequenced licks you were doing. I have to get off of my ass and start practicing. Im also sure that my teacher is going to beat my ass because i havent picked up my guitar since my last lesson over a month ago!!

Post the power tab?? So...my problem with arpeggios of the sweep variety isn't necessarily playing them (although, surely I can improve there :aww: ), its using them musically and in time. For instance...I want to be able to throw a sweep in the middle of something that is linear and melodic but double the speed (or half the note duration) but maintain the tempo...if that makes any sense. I'd love to find a power tab/guitar pro tab that demonstrated that... If I was better at those programs I'd make one myself. In fact I've been meaning to start spending more time on technique practice - anybody have a favorite GP file they use for some of their favorite technique practice??

Ralph can play leads over my riffs.

That shit is just an accident waiting to happen.

that's some strange fingering  i guess i'd rather do it with a barre on the G and D strings (14th fret). i suck at the speed though

I think it would be easier to play that by starting it with 12-15 hammer-on on A-string. Check out Symphony X's Smokes & Mirrors intro for practicing sweep picking.

PM me (or send it to SixStringGuitars@aol.com) your email address (and anyone else who wants the powertab).

Regarding timing... it is EXTREMELY hard to do it the way I have it written here (and in the powertab) in time because you have to have a good sense of time already to place SIXTEEN notes before the next beat hits. Easier for timing purposes would be to do 32nd notes at 108 bpm (or 120 bpm which is about as fast as you can get with the notes still sounding distinct). The more notes you're cramming in between beats, the easier to frag the rhythm. This is still a cool exercise for you but, do smaller subdivisions--32nd notes at 108 bpm, 16th notes at 216 bpm.

The other thing is this... I don't sweep that often but, it is apart of my style (probably because of my influences). These day I'll do more M7/m7/D7 & M9/m9 type sweeps but, will throw in some simple minor or major onee and just invertthem so I'm playing the same one just in different positions (easy way to extend an arpeggio). I am not a sweep king but, I sorta have it where I want it. To get better at placing them in the right place rhythmically and melodically, you have to listen to the masters and internalize what's going on:

Yngwie Malmsteen
Vinnie Moore
80's Paul Gilbert
Jason Becker
Marty Friedman
etc.
I would say Michael Romeo but, I think he string skips and taps his arpeggios like Paul Gilbert does now but, they are so smooth that they sound like sweeps.

I would do it like this...

---------------8-12(h)17(t)12(p)8(p)-------------------*
------------10--------------------10(h)----------------*
----------9-------------------------9(h)---------------*
-------10----------------------------10(h)-------------*
----12---------------------------------12(h)-----------*
-----------------------------------------12(t)7(p)5(p)--*

I regularly do something similar. I like to add a 7 and sometimes an 11. I started doing this just to make it easier, but the changeup sounds cool.

-----------8-10(h)12(h)17(t)12(p)8(p)--------------------*
---------8------------------------10(h)------------------*
-------9---------------------------9(h)------------------*
----10------------------------------10(h)----------------*
-12----------------------------------12(h)10(p)12(h) ----*
---------------------------------------------------------*

I've been trying to start on the 7th low B string, but it sounds WAY too cheeezy.

Man, I suck at sweeping, I can do a few very basic patterns and use them a bit but I prefer the Gilbert method of just picking out String skipping Arps, its just alot easier for me to alt pick them...

That said, I would like to be able to find the time to really dig in and learn the whole sweeping thing, in the right place , it can sound awesome...

BTW, It was great to hang out with ya on saturday Ivan!!!

If someone wants, I can post some different sweep fingerings and positions later tonight...

that would be cool Jaakko!!!

here's a pretty crazy dim7th string skipping arp that I like to toy with that can sound like a video if played at high velocity!
