here's a pretty crazy dim7th string skipping arp that I like to toy with that can sound like a video if played at high velocity!

Stanbog, Dave, Pete, & Jaakko... I do it the other 2 ways you've demonstrated as well (here's one of them):

----------------12-17-
-------------13-------
----------14----------
-------14-------------
-12h15---------------
----------------------

1 4 3 3 2 1 4

BUT, the thing is--when going for the Gainfreak style of shredding, you also have to make it LOOK difficult and travel the farthest reaches of the fretboard. It's more impressive to go from the 17th fret to the 3rd fret ;) :D The '80's are alive and well

But, seriously... I think it's easier to hold the rhythm together via the fingering I put in my 1st post. It's also a different tone vs. hamering on the 15th fret of the A string... and Ralph played it like that so 'nuff said :D

Man, I suck at sweeping, I can do a few very basic patterns and use them a bit but I prefer the Gilbert method of just picking out String skipping Arps, its just alot easier for me to alt pick them...

That said, I would like to be able to find the time to really dig in and learn the whole sweeping thing, in the right place , it can sound awesome...

BTW, It was great to hang out with ya on saturday Ivan!!!

Kage

Likewise Kage, great to see you again!

Kage also knows what's up about the look thing... he does the slide up and down the neck while hitting the same pitch on a different string thing. Yeah it sounds cool but, it LOOKS even better

Yes, nice one Ant

Here's one I lifted from Vinnie Moore that I happened to play while I was at Dave's once or twice ;) :

----------9h12h15s18p15p12------------------12h15h18s21v
------------------------------------------------------------
-9h12h15--------------------18p15p12h15h18---------------
------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------

that last v is for vibrato. Ant, you have that wide Yngwie-esque vibrato that would go just perfect there

Here's a fun one, Firkins lick. Tap the notes at the 13th fret. And the only way to do this lick fast and as fluid as Firkins is to sweep on the neck with your pick. And when you descend, just hammer on. It took me a while to get used to sweeping on the neck but it sounds cool. That guy Fabrizeo Leo does it often.

PLay this lick twice then move it up a half step, then move it up a whole step, it sounds wild.

Here are 3 different fingerings (the most common ones, I think) for playing major and minor arpeggios on 5 & 6 strings:

h = hammer-on
p = pull-off
d = down picking
u = up picking

E-minor:
Code:
.....1...4...2..3...2..1...4...1..2.3..2.4..1.....finger
E---------------------7-h-12-p-7-------------------
B------------------8--------------8-----------------
G---------------9-------------------9---------------
D------------9------------------------9------------
A----7-h-10------------------------------10-7-----
E-------------------------------------------------
.....d.......d..d..d..d...u......u..u.u..u..d

Hammer the 3-7, tap the 12th fret and pull-off the 7-3:

.....4..2..1..3...1...4....4...1...3..1..2..4...........finger
E-----------------3-h-7-12-7-p-3-------------------------
B--------------5---------t---------5---------------------
G----------4-------------------------4-------------------
D-------5-------------------------------5----------------
A----7-------------------------------------7-------------
E-------------------------------------------------------
.....d..d..d...d..d................u.u..u..u

......1...4....3...3...1..1...1...1...1...3..3..4...1....finger
E-----------------------------12-------------------------
B-------------------------12-----12---------------------
G---------------------12-------------12-----------------
D-----------------14---------------------14-------------
A-------------14----------------------------14-----------
E----12-h-15------------------------------------15-12--
.....d........d....d...d...d..d..u...u...u..u...u..d

E-Major:

......1...4..3..3..3..1...4....1..3..3..3..4..1.......finger
E---------------------7-h-12-p-7---------------------
B------------------9--------------9------------------
G---------------9--------------------9---------------
D------------9--------------------------9------------
A----7-h-11-------------------------------11-7-----
E--------------------------------------------------

.....4..3..1..2..1...4....4...1...2.1..3...4.................
E----------------4-h-7-12-7-p-4--------------------------
B-------------5---------t---------5-----------------------
G----------4------------------------4--------------------
D-------6------------------------------6-----------------
A----7------------------------------------7--------------
E-------------------------------------------------------

......1...4...3....3...2...1...1...1...2...3...3...4..1....
E------------------------------12--------------------------
B--------------------------12-----12----------------------
G---------------------13--------------13------------------
D-----------------14----------------------14--------------
A-------------14------------------------------14----------
E----12-h-16--------------------------------------16-12--

ARGH, it's impossible to get the finger numbers to the right spots.

I'd start from this 3-string sweep which Yngwie uses a lot:

-----3--2--1--4----1--2--3--2--1--4----1--2--3--finger
E|--------12-17-p-12----------12-17-p-12---------
B|-----13------------13----13-------------13------
G|--14------------------14-------------------14---
D|-------------------------------------------------
A|-------------------------------------------------
E|-------------------------------------------------
......d...d...d..u..........u...d...d...d...u..... .....u...

Once you get comfortable with it, you can do it on all shapes on 3 strings.

I am a complete klutz when it comes to sweeping and then tapping; For its either sweep or tap but not both...

gary hoey plays a similar lick in "Hocus Pocus", but he picks all notes except for the slides upward. i think it's actually easier that way. it's not as fluid sounding, but it still sounds cool

You can add slide part to the tap to get one more note into the sweep/tap/slide thingie to make it even pain in the ass.

Geez...with all that work...put it in Power Tab or GP...then post the screen shot..and the file.

Yeah, being a Gilbert fan, Ive attempted that with disastrous results... I have been working on the rapid fire Alt picked 2 note per string pentatonics and have been getting pretty damn good at it ( if I dont say so myself!!!) Its really tough when compared to 3 note per string stuff but if youre diligent enough, it will come to you eventually.

I always loved the sound of it from guys like Frank Marino, Steve Stevens, Neal Schon, Zakk Wylde( hes a great example) and Doug Aldrich so I took the plunge and just started doing simple exercises in front of the TV just to get the muscle memory going and now its become a bonafide part of my playing...

I've done economy picked pentatonic run exercises as well but I still suck when it comes to those.

Zakk and Doug play amazing picked pentatonic runs! I love that stuff... If I'm correct, you played some sick picked pentatonic licks in the Xander song.

I suck at economy picking too Jaakoo. I can get a decent tone using that style of picking but, I feel like I'm playing half speed :aww:

Bump for the ptb attached at the bottom of the 1st post... thanks to Mr. Savage
