And by that I mean, authentic: Low to mid output, A2 magnet etc. I know that limits things but get as close as you can. This is going into my new Kiesel...

Heard a lot of good things about that pickup.

Duncan SH-11 Custom Custom maybe?

I personally prefer the DiMarzio Norton for that EVH bite, but since it's mid/high output and A5, it's no contender...

AFAIC, Ed used a SD Custom on the 1st album.

So if you want 1st album tone and you're using a 6-holer, get a SD SH-5 Custom:

(playing starts at 11:00)

...
OTOH, if you're using a Floyd or similar, get a SD SH-11 Custom Custom for later Ed tone.

I tried a lot of VH style pickups and surprisingly found the Tone Zone to be my favorite in my super strat. It's pretty hot but just sounds better in that guitar for some reason.

"Low to mid output" Then you don't want an EVH humbucker. I wish people would stop believing he used low output pickups. He admitted he lied about things back then and when he finally puts his name on a guitar the pickup is high output. A Dimarzio Super Distortion or the Mighty Mite copy was used extensively by him in the old days. Duncan did more than one pickup for him also. He needed higher output pickups and perhaps other tricks to push the front of the Marshall.

Tone Zone is my go to pickup for two reasons. I like it and it sounds like the pickup in the EBMM and nails most old VH tones. Franky pickup gets nice WACF tones.

Actually the new Wolfgang pickup isn't too hot output wise. Med to med high at most. And it has the VH growl to it. It's like a lower output Tone Zone with less compression so better dynamics. You might like that one.

Said above...I love the Wolfgangs. Have one in my Charvel and that thing sounds fantastic. Hotter than you're asking about, but cleans up great. Dig it.

You want EVH style but limit it to A2?

My favorite EVH sounding pickup is the Duncan 59/Custom Hybrid. It just kicks ass. The Duncan Custom is great too.

That's a sweet guitar man! I'm very fond of the SD Custom '78 for an A2 magnet hot PAF "VH" type pickup, and I LOVE the Bare Knuckles VH2. They are really pretty similar in voicing, output, etc., but the VH2 is an A5 so it is just a little faster in response and crisper. Either way, they are both great pickups for that vibe.

I really like the Duncan Custom 5 for VH-type tones. It has the right tone and feel to me.

Yep. I love that pickup too. I've tried it with an A2 and an A5 and preferred it with the A5.

I did't care for my Custom 78. I have DiMarzio AT-1s in my Frankenstrat and Bumble Bee. It kills in the Bee, but the Frankenstrat's wood is different and so it doesn't sound as good. May throw the JB back in there.

The Custom/Custom is an A2. It does early VH extremely well. The Custom is ceramic, and the Custom 5 is A5.

I find the AT-1 does the early VH thing really well, plus it also can cover a number of other different tones as well making it very versatile.

I`d say if you can play like Ed every pickup that`s been mentioned will do the trick

Bingo
Yup, this is my go to for early VH. Output level and tone is right on the money.
