I want to swap the 1000 series Floyd in a guitar and ordered an original. I haven’t dove in yet because I am wondering if I have to remove the mounting studs or if I can keep the 1000 series ones and just screw the original studs into it.

And is there a difference in quality of the studs? Will someone here tell me to swap them because it’s the key part of the upgrade?

I am reading how to remove but also seeing that I may have to redrill the body for the new one. That doesn’t sound like fun.

I have guitars that have original German Floyd Rose and one with a Korean Floyd Rose 1000 thats on my USA 2009 Charvel San Dimas and see no reason to upgrade that 1000 to German. It works flawlessly. Why spend the money? Are you having problems with it?

You should be able to use the new studs with the original body inserts.

Do you think there is a quality difference? There has to be because the 1000 studs only are $13 and the originals are $33 I think.

Bridge post I have seen(FR1000 series) are around the same price as original floyd parts.
You found a deal for under $15.00
Only upgrades I can see are the Titanium Post from FU-Tone ($50.00)
I did Titanium Saddle inserts and the coated springs on a Original Floyd and couldn't hear any difference.

You'll have to check the intonation switching from the 1000 to a OFR .
I thought the OFR felt stiffer than the 1000 .
I feel your OCD though for wanting to replace the 100 with a OFR.

I typically swap the trem arm coupler and brass fine tuners and call it a day

Yes

There has to be a difference. Im not saying it matters but they are 2.8x the cost.

Just know that there height differences between the OFR and 1000 unit.

Doesn't "hafta" be anything Bro. More $$$ doesn't always mean "better".
Just put a big brass block on it & call it a day.
All that "how to" is on youtube man.

You might not want to hear it but this is exactly right I wouldn't mess with it put the block on it and you'll be good to go. They charge more because it says OFR!

Ive put Big Brass on several Floyd 1000 zinc plates & saddles and its a huge upgrade & works fine.
You can get real Floyd Brass Blocks as little as $25 bucks on ebay.
Stay away from companies like FU and what not. They're way overpriced.

I just want to make sure I understand: is the OP asking if the threaded inserts need to be changed? Or just the knife edge posts? A brand new German Floyd should come with brand new hardened posts and inserts. I would not mess with pulling the existing inserts out of the body, but I would swap the new knife edge posts that come with the new German Floyd.

Swapping the posts not needed at all.
New trem spacing should be the same.

There are studs that go into the body and inserts that are the screws that screw into the studs. Just so we are on the same page...

I am talking about swapping all 1000 series parts for original except the studs that are already in the body from the 1000 series. I would use the new inserts/screws into those studs.

One of my friends works with all kinds of metals and tests their tensile strength for fasteners and washers. I had him check the 1000 studs as well as the baseplate vs. the Original studs and baseplate when I changed them out on my PRS CE24 DW. The process left a slight mark about the side of a small pin head on the side of the longer part of each stud. Nothing anyone would even notice.

He gave me a scale rating on hardness. The 1000 studs clock in at about a 5.6 on the hardness scale out of 10. The OFRs come in at 8.0. I also had him check these new Sofia studs and inserts that I got that have the ability to lock the stud in place. Those tested at 8.5. I did this a while back but unfortunately I didn't take any pics at the time.

The 1000 saddles are also a slight bit narrower. I found this out when trying to replace them with the Graphtech locking saddles. I ended up just buying a new OFR baseplate and reusing some of my old OFR parts (spacer, block, block studs and spring plate) along with the Graphtech saddles. All worked great!

All this being said, the 1000 series works just fine without any issues.

Hell yeah there is. The 1000 series always has finicky fine tuners, (bitch to turn until lubed, atleast), the knife edges and studs are inferior, and prone to gouging if you're not careful doing your set up,, the trem bar has a tendency to come loose after a couple dive-bombs, (I've had this happen on MANY 1000's).

The 1000's do work well, with some TLC. That said, a German Floyd is superior in every way, and I'll call it an upgrade any day of the week. I've had excellent 1000's, and some real pieces of shit. At least with German, you know you'll have a flawless functioning Floyd, EVERY time.

Great info and what I was looking for. So you did swap them out?
