Taming the 5150III Stealth 100 6L6

Wait until you put in a proper 12AU7 in V4 or V5... The red channel will lose some of its 'chugging' abilities, but it will suddenly give you a great Gary Moore-like tone. Very bold, middy without the honkiness, lower gain, but great sustain. It sounds awesome, but because you'll lose the chugginess, that's the reason I didn't leave it in. It'll do the Journey thing too...basically most 80's AOR thick, sustainy lead-tones.
I tried it with a NOS RCA one from the 70's... See attached picture taken at the height of the April 2020 covid-shopping craze. 😜

@JerEvil if I were you, I'd start with putting 1 5751 in V1 and 1 in V4; the first one will lower the gain on all 3 channels and the 2nd one should shift the red channel a bit away from all the unusable insanity.
Ok I’ll try that. I just ordered a second 5751. I’ll start at V1, then try V1 and V4. For shots and giggles I’ll try all 3 of these just in V1 to see what each does, then the 5751’s in V1 and V4.

Go V4 &V5 then for red. V1 would affect green and blue, yes. As mentioned above, V1 & V4 would tame red a bit more. For strictly red, I'd go V4 & V5.
Right on. I think the green channel currently is kinda “tits on a bull” so I’m gonna play with both options.

Appreciate your guys help on this.

I tend to run the gain knobs on both the blue and red channels at noon on my Stealth. Maybe I'm just weird...lol! Yes, they have a shit load of gain. However, I find that below noon the amp thins out in a way that I don't care for. It a perfect world, I'd love the Stealth blue channel and the OG 5150 III red channel. For cleans, I run the volume high and use the gain knob for volume. I have found that this yields the best results for me. YMMV.

I can't get into these amps. The gain level on the red channel is absurd. I've done all the tricks, (never owned a 100 watt, just 50 watt 6L6, and 50 Stealth). I prefer the Stealth by a mile, but the red chqnnel gain is ridiculous on all of them. Loved the Stealth blue with a boost. Killer channel.

Yeah the 5150III, especially stealth, has a ton of gain even at low settings. I believe Jens Kruse of Kruse Kontrol does a mod that tames the gain on the red channel a bit. He modded my 5150III 50 watter to stealth specs, fender clean and separate channel 1 and did a great job. I could have gotten the gain mod too, I almost wish I had.

On his site, it doesn't say he does the gain mod on red for the 100 watt stealth It still may be worth e-mailing him to see if he can help.

The Blue channel is the business for sure.

You guys are inventive. I will give you that. I have seen men shave with axes. It is impressive, but i would take a razor.

Also killed a hog with a .22 one time, but much rather use a .30-06

I had the Stealth 100 for a bit....paired it with a Bogner 212c with greenbacks. I think I paid $1200 back in the day. Sold it and the bogner cab. I liked my EVH 6L6 combo(2x12) more. The blue channel is money on the combo for me. I didn't care for any of the channels on the stealth. Had to run the resonance like all the way down damn near. After A/Bing them for a month, I felt like I could get those tones with the combo and my boosts....didn't work the other way. Couldn't get the combo tones with the stealth. Looked damn cool, but that was it for me.

Sure, but not give you *useable* less gain. :p And that's what @JerEvil was originally asking about; how to tame this amp.
I’ll make a video . You can use the red Chanell at half way and then use a ns to with everything in the middle to create a rock tone with lesss usable gain . It will sound like a rock amp that’s boosted some. Even acdc type tones

I definitely wanna see this. Thanks!

I would like to see this as well! The blue channel is money. The letdown of the red channel to me is the gain and how fast it gets out of control, to me it seems useless above 11 o'clock.

Yeah, just past 10 o'clock it's nutty. WAY too much, and I play metal. You know it's a lot when metal guys call it obnoxious. I don't know what they were thinking, aside from Eddie using no boosts, but still... It's an obnoxious amount of gain, and other than the newer Bad Cat Lynx 50, it's the king of absurdity in the gain department. I find it completely unusable.

Yeah I got this amp for a great price so figured “everyone needs a 5150 variant, so why not”

And it’s just ridiculous and not in a good way. I’m gonna test the 5751 in V1 tonight and see what’s what. It kinda blows my mind how much people seem to love this amp.
