Taming the 5150III Stealth 100 6L6

I do think the 5751 does a really nice job of dialing down the gain noticeably without sacrificing the core tone or sparkle of the amp. I have gone this route with a couple of flamethrower amps in my stable and I find that I can still achieve A-Bomb levels of gain - but closer to '9' on the gain knob rather than having it all hit you by '5' (or earlier). Then you have those low(er) levels of gain: plexi; AC/DC; JCM800; between 2 & 8 on the gain knob. But overall, the amp retains the 'sparkle' that some of the other lower gain variant preamp tubes can stifle.

I was going to tag you, because you always talk about the fix for the red. I think yiu should give more info though
I use it at almost full gate . Have gain on 6 on red channel . But : I play like fear factory

Yeah that’s my hope. And maybe make the Green channel a proper clean?

Noisegate .
A noise gate won't fix the need for having lower levels of gain from the Red channel.
2 5751's will do that.

Look at it this way; the stock gain knob goes from 1 to 10, where around 3 or 4, you're already at insane gain. And above 6 or 7 or so, it's purely unusable, oversaturated mess.
Now, throw in the 2 5751's and the gain knob's range is shifted to say -2 to 8. Which means that in the first quarter of the turn, you can suddenly use the red channel to play Thin Lizzy or Journey type of gain stuff.
No noise gate in the world will give you this.

No one is arguing that for sure. I think what techdeth is after is how to make the red channel useable for deathmetal type gain. I am confused why anyone would use red channel for journey

5751 in V3 & V4. See where that gets you.
Not for the 100W. That has been my advice for the 50W. But for the 100W version it's apparently shifted a tube; V4 up to V6 is for red.

@Smash gotcha re: noisegate.

And the channel, hellz yes.
I see options for one of our resident YT'ers. :checkthisout:

So if I want all channels knocked down a bit, then 5751 in V1?

There way to fake it with a gate . A noise gate can do more than just gate

Wait until you put in a proper 12AU7 in V4 or V5... The red channel will lose some of its 'chugging' abilities, but it will suddenly give you a great Gary Moore-like tone. Very bold, middy without the honkiness, lower gain, but great sustain. It sounds awesome, but because you'll lose the chugginess, that's the reason I didn't leave it in. It'll do the Journey thing too...basically most 80's AOR thick, sustainy lead-tones.
I tried it with a NOS RCA one from the 70's... See attached picture taken at the height of the April 2020 covid-shopping craze. 😜

@JerEvil if I were you, I'd start with putting 1 5751 in V1 and 1 in V4; the first one will lower the gain on all 3 channels and the 2nd one should shift the red channel a bit away from all the unusable insanity.

Go V4 &V5 then for red. V1 would effect green and blue, yes. As mentioned above, V1 & V4 would tame red a bit more. For strictly red, I'd go V4 & V5.
