Interesting term "buttery tension". Some time ago when I got tired of all my gear, I sold most and kept the important stuff to me and have been on a rampage ever since, getting more shit. Not what I intended: BUT, I have since found that there are certain guitars that give that "buttery tension" a real meaning. Then there are some that the strings feel like piano wire when bending. "Mommy, my fingers hurt!" Good adjective for something I could not describe myself.
Yeah, this gets mixed replies, but I honestly believe neck relief is the biggest card holder when it comes to string tension. Guitar is too tough to play? Turn the truss rod an 1/8th of the way counterclockwise and the strings will loosen up a bit. My only “proof” is how it feels after doing it, as well as watching the floating trem on my Strat raise/lower when adjusting the truss rod. A couple weeks ago I added some relief to the Gilmour Strat, tuned it up and the bridge was decked, where it was floating 1/8” before I put the relief in it. That was enough for me to confirm that adding relief reduces string tension, or else the bridge would have been exactly where it was before I added the relief.
