Don't you think cowardice, narcissism, and lust for instant gratification are baked into the social media space online? I mean honestly it's worse for guitar even than the average shit.

Now imagine this den of cowardice and deception is the only medium you know because you're a young guitar player.

They don't even realize how much more normal this shit used to be - at least the brass tacks of it used to be normal.

Everything is a fake, curated plastic image like a magazine shoot - even the music and playing itself!

I think its tragic and not enough attention is given to it. This is a bit of a generalisation, but society is partially in denial over it, and certainly unwilling to address the root causes. I work with young people, and I see it every day. Not that I was exactly a sterling example of awesomeness when I was in my early 20s, but Im hugely grateful I didnt have this growing up. Its toxic, but we've let it happen...

I gig with younger bands all the time, and give lessons to some younger dudes, and I see it all the fucking time

I don't think we understand that pandora's box has been opened with this - pretty soon everything will be fake

I don't think alot of RT users understand that youtube and facebook are for the older guys and gals. We still see some (not a ton, but still some) normal ass room clips with imperfections and humanity, to go along with our "studio" recordings.

All the kids who are supposed to inherit rock and roll from us are on instagram and tiktok, and there's almost NO guitar or music that isn't fake bullshit like this. Everything is mimed, everything is prerecorded, every recording is quantized, every clip was recorded at half speed and then sped up, every imperfection punched in.... every god damn ounce of humanity completely sanitized out of it

Giacomo Woppity Boopity or whatever his name is, is just the first to get caught red handed

tons of them - Davie504, the Ben Stein-esque bass dude fucking sucks at bass and fakes his shit too. The rings of saturn guy is cartoonish in his fakery.

This either has to be called out really soon, or else this is going to become the norm and guitar itself is going to become dancing with the stars or america's got talent
 
Case in point: US Masters. McIlroy (the great) won, but an anciliary experience felt by many was the prohibition of Mobile phones, and people loved it.

People were happier without them. I'd get rid of mine tomorrow (but Im married so...:poop:)

At one of the clubs where my bands play, its a running gag to mock people with their phones out

Honestly for a lot of human endeavors, this is preferable
 
I do envy the computer editing skills of a lot of these young players. That’s about it.

i've been recording, engineering, working in studios most of my adult life, so I have some of those skills - though i'm certainly not his majesty Glenn Fricker or anything

And it 100% makes it worse and MORE annoying knowing how the sausage is made

Because for my entire existence that kind of shit has been, uh, looked down on, to put it as diplomatically as possible. A last resort in an emergency.

Like autotune, for most producers in the late 90s and 2000s, this was a shameful thing you did to fix a mistake or two and/or make things go faster. You would punch in at the one clam in an otherwise great take on a solo. You would change the tape speed to get a cool drum effect or change the key because the singer realized it's out of his range. You would patch together a take out of partials when tracking was over but the main take of the rhythm guitars was 40 cents out of tune.

This was all shit you only did to save time and money in the studio, not to misrepresent your music or make everyone around you believe you were Steve fucking Vai.

Because you were only cheating yourself right? Eventually youre going to play that shit live, or be put on the spot, and you'll have to pay the piper.

Yep. They have definitely gone too far. I hate when the human element is lost. On the other hand I’m glad we learnt how to record metal better, because some old albums sound so bad. Some great performances that weren’t done justice.

There is 100% a sweet spot for metal recordings in like the late 90s a little bit, but definitely by the 2000s

I agree that there's a ton of albums that were ruined by awful recordings, especially in the 80s, but it wasn't worth everything being "played" by the computer like techno. It wasn't worth this

As much as I wish "...and justice for all" and "darkness descends" and etc etc sounded better, they don't and they never will, and we're stuck with dogshit guitar music

You just need to make videos where you haven't bathed for days and you're yelling and stuff=expert engineer. Either that or get you some safety glasses and protective equipment=metal amps expert.

correct. in today's social media, it seems whoever yells the loudest with the most BS usually wins.

As far as real music, I think that's subjective...

Been there done that, playing my first paying gig at 14 and my last at 32/33...practicing and learning constantly, etc. I enjoyed it, and it was still a good time / place for live music of all kinds.

Since I stopped playing in bands, my guitar/bass skills have diminished through less practice, less focus, getting older / arthritis...but I've learned other instruments and explore other types of music, from '60s psychedelic, '70s hard rock, '80s new wave, various fusion, prog, and various combinations...for a few years I focused on synth wave, and also spent a few years learning my Roland AIRA system (which I still have) to make trance/psytrance/techno "rave" music.

I enjoy making/playing music/noise so much more today because I do it for my own enjoyment, as a hobby, not to get gigs, sell music / merch. I learn, do, play, dabble etc., whatever interests me at the moment or for an extended period of time, and set my own goals and priorities.

I don't make money from music, I spend money on things that help me make music/noise in whatever direction interests me...no stress because I don't care to impress / prove anything to anyone...except myself.

TL;DR; I make music/noise for myself...if I like the results, that's all that matters to me.
 
Computers and electronics are partially to blame as well.

Guitar players need to get back to just guitar and amp, the way it used to be.
 
A lot of cryin and envy about younger players... absolute TGP only 20 years later.
90s and 2000 were best because Your head stuck there.
There are still a lot great players soundwise and playing wise today, just explore. On the other side, I revisiting old metal albums from 80/90s , which are revered here and a lot of them just sound like shit and it is all about sentiment.
This complaining in the exact moment where You have to realize You are just old fart whit nothing to comtribute the world 😀😀

Not that there's anything wrong with that, I do both, but they are kind of non-overlapping magisteria.
The bands that play out regularly are older. Younger players don’t seem to be interested in interacting with others.

There are some younger bands (mostly “metal”) with no real venues to play. Bigger cities there are a few. The “let’s have ten bands that play for the other band members”kinda shows.

Kid that works for me has a band that plays out once a month or so. They do originals and covers and are not metal. There are some younger bands that do exist, but are not the norm. Most venues around here just have single and duos.
 
My girls are starting to listen to pop music now so I’ve been checking out the new stuff on the radio.
There seems to be a big swing towards more organic singer/songwriter stuff coming out which I think is cool.
I don’t particularly like the music, but it very much has the vibe of someone sitting down with a guitar and notepad, and writing actual songs.

I agree the social media stuff is a bit much though
