too little too late from the guy in slayer that we all collectively make fun of for being a douche, and throwing tons of wild, out of key, kahler bombs in all his solos.

wait...its not going to really be called The Kerry King Band is it?
Kerry's Kahler Band.

I heard him in one interview saying something to the effect of Jeff shouldn’t have even been playing a concert at the time, as in he sounded like shit. I don’t know, but seeing how things ended up not too much later, and coming from the perspective that hanneman was the real artistic force, just seemed kind of dick like. And the lombardo stuff. Sure, sometimes that’s needed, and he did very well for himself, but just sayin’…

DX Ferris' book really goes into a lot of this ^^^ stuff in-depth, I can't recommend it enough for fans of the band and have read it and it's counterpart (33 1/3 Reign In Blood) several times.

How about this? In just 2 sentences he informs us that guitar heroes existed before him, he became one, and there have been none after him. Pfffft, lol, like there’s not a hundred players that came after him that wipe the floor with his ass.

And while we’re on the topic, dude made some great, innovative music from the early 80’s to the mid 90’s but everything after Divine Intervention is soooo boring, it has no edge, it’s a chore to sit through any of their later stuff.
Show me on the doll where Kerry touched you….?

I don't know about you guys, but I can't wait to hear the album. It'll be interesting to see what they put out at least.

Kerry King to me is the guy who kickstarted Slayer. He did most of the work on the first album, and deserves mad props for that. The birth of a sound that I think eventually straddled the genre between thrash and death metal album with Divine Intervention. And I think that album is perfection. And yeah, big Hanneman fan as well.

In fact, I'm often torn between Slayer and Death when it comes to my favourite metal band. Tough call.

Honestly I don't know what you're talking about. Hanneman was the musical mastermind and most prolific writer of Slayer since day #1. And there were plenty of 'deaththrash' bands melding thrash and death metal circa 89-93 (pre Divine Intervention) like Demolition Hammer and Morbid Saint.

and if there's ONE band that deserved the crown for being the kickstarter of that, it would be Possessed, not Slayer.
Seven Churches came out in what, 1985...ya know, even BEFORE Reign in effin' Blood!

IMO Show No Mercy beats them both, and it of course is an 83, one of those many great 83 releases in rock/metal.
Welcome To Hell (81) would be my pick for the true beginning of that 80's wave of metal.

Demolition Fucking Hammer ?

Hellhammer and Bathory were Death/Black metal af in 1984.

While all great in their own right, the topic was the first death/thrash crossover. If you want to call Venom death metal, be my guest and while you're at it, pass me the bong you're sippin' on. :ROFLMAO:

Possessed wasn't even the first death metal band. That would be Chuck Schuldiner's Mantas. which was formed in 1983, and was well know in underground music tape trading circles.

Don't get me wrong, but I would not put any of the Demolition Hammer and Morbid Saint in the same league as Slayer. On the writing credits though, you're absolutely right. Hanneman was definitely the more prolific writer.

PS: There's a lot of overlap in death metal and thrash. What I meant is that Slayer are the first ones that did it right.

Ehm, if you *do* want to go in all semantic (aside from the fact that Possessed was also formed in '83) here's some different info: link and link.

2nd links TL;DR quote:
Jeff: "Here's the story: Between [pre-DEATH outfit] MANTAS and the first DEATH album [1987's 'Scream Bloody Gore'], [DEATH leader] Chuck [Schuldiner] moved out to our fan club president's house to be around us. He's quoted in countless magazines that POSSESSED is his primary influence. His album came out two years after 'Seven Churches', which was written in '82/'83.

There. I see myself out now. Ciao. :p

IMO most negatives on him are just people repeating what they've heard on the internet about him based-on what other people heard on the internet about him, based-on ,,,,,,,,,repeat, repeat.
Yep. Same with Bostaph's drumming. Anyone that shits on his playing is absolutely clueless and should go back to the basement.

I've met Kerry. I've hung out and drank with Kerry on several occasions, get a camera or microphone out of that dudes face, and he's one of the coolest, most chill people I've come across. Always enjoyed getting to hang with him and Gary.

Venom was like an inspirational linchpin that all those forms can be traced back to. Punk, thrash, death, black ect...
A Thousand Days In Sodom and In League With Satan are great examples. More of a death-ish vibe IMO than thrashy or black.

Angel Dust and Live Like An Angel Die Like A Devil are more punk-thrashy.
They have a bit of all of it really.

All fine and dandy, except Death by Metal came out in 1983. Chuck was 16. Songs from that album made it onto Scream Bloody Gore. The Possessed demo Death Metal came out in 1984. And Seven Churches came out in 1985. So, semantics.

This is a good article about his influences:

I’ve never heard that story about Chuck being a Possessed fanboy. Interesting, I’ve seen no other articles like that. Link, please.

Definitely not my favourite drummer, but no one’s shitting on anyone. I just sure would like to see a video of Fictional Reality from Divine Intervention, for example.
