So a few years after pledging on kickstarter, “The Magnet” was finally delivered. The device clips onto the neck while simultaneously holding a smart phone. Then you use the smartphone’s slow motion to video record your picking technique (or fretting technique). I really look forward to putting this to the test and enhancing my picking techniques.

Wow. That might be a great learning tool. I wonder how it would work with finger picking.

I bet I could improve my picking a lot with one of those! Is it possible to buy them?

And nice guitar!!

Cool! I've tried putting my phone in a mic stand cradle and standing perfectly still while playing. It works in a pinch but lots of issues and not very convenient.

"Siri, make me play faster!"

Lol!

Nice- I'm on that list as well, just waiting for delivery.

I was getting email updates, but only recently saw they were starting to ship. I figured it would be after Christmas. I was surprised to get it so quickly. Honestly, it’s a pretty cool device.

Well that's great to hear- I also figured it would be a ways out. Though in my case, I'm in Canada, so it'll definitely be slower.

I realize this isn't a popular thread, but I finally had some time to sit down and use the magnet. I learned that, at times, when using economy picking, my first initial downstroke on each new string is a little too much and the pick actually hits the next string before the upstroke. This doesn't always happen, but it happened enough for me to notice. Now I have been focusing on adjusting so I don't hit the next string which had made my playing faster AND cleaner. This is something I never knew and the magnet revealed it. Nice!!

That’s so cool but now I have to rethink what I been doing recently. IIRC, Troy calls it a rest stroke; where you follow thru and rest on the adjacent string.

I realized that I ONLY do this on downstrokes. My most comfortable pick stroke by a country mile. So now I actually practice following thru on upstrokes to rest on the adjacent string.

But you’re saying your playing has improved by not using rest strokes at all? Do I have that right?

I get the term, but I’m just moving through the wound string a bit too much on the first down stroke. I’m thinking that is due to the change or initial run and im just using it too much power on the first stroke? Could be the string tension is different and I’m not compensating for it?

That’s pretty rad, looks like a neck brace
(no pun intended).
The best thing a guitarist can do for his picking is learn how to play the drums.
The same way you wiggle the sticks is the same way you wiggle the guitar pick.
Also, listening from the drums standpoint, you immediately pick up on feel/syncopations which
you cannot hear while playing the guitar.
My right hand became very accurate and
less wanking, G,D,A + jiberish, vomit.
Now it’s find the motive & the melody lines of the songs and create, not wank.

This looks a bit clunky but very useful. I'm all for any tool like this that can help you improve. When doing Alt picking I was hitting the downstroke harder than the upstroke and so I continually work to balance that out. I'd love to see some screenshots of what the outcome looks like. Can you reverse the camera too see fretting? I use a GoPro for this effort but the audio sucks but I like it because I can see everything.

I'm liking the guitar.

Me too

I've nerded out on Grady's stuff and I love how he has broken what these guys do naturally, into a style and science of play. My issue is that I notice I am forever changing my picking style, pick size, and angle I pick at. I think a lot of our styles grow out of how well we can hold on to the pick even. I know getting a good grip or lack thereof caused me to play with the pick more on an angle.. at times seemingly parallel to the strings. This is why I have recently gone to more sharp pointy picks. Get some of that attack back.

Drumming was great for my playing as well.
