It's just not that great sounding. AB165 circuit is the worst of them, IMO.
Have you tried playing it like a Plexi ala jumping the channels? I had a 1965 Bassman with that circuit; sounded glorious after jumping then boosting

Well, here's the deal. I have an older amp (circa 1967). It's not special. It's also neither exceedingly valuable nor rare. It's an okay amp. Actually, I'm not exactly fond of it. I recapped it, installed fresh tubes and biased it. It's sort of underwelming in the tone department. So I checked a lot of other components and all of the resistors that I've tested have dwelled out of spec. I'm thinking I need to replace just about everything.

On three other forums I mentioned that I was considering modifying it and the members had a collective cow. I'm just wondering if that would happen here because I won't bother mentioning it. It seems there are a lot of actually valuable amps, like classic Marshalls and such, that get modified here so I'm hoping to be able to discuss it without the conniption fits.
I'd say to first check if it's better to sell it and then get something you like better with the cash, and if not to mod in as reversible a manner as possible in case you have a change of heart later and want to sell it. At a smaller scale I had a similar situation where I got an amp to mod, figured I wouldn't ever sell it 'cause I got it specifically to mod, then part-way through the mod process found a much better parts donor, picked that up, and now I wish I could sell the first amp. Chubbs' idea seems like a good one: Mod it, but non-destructively, and saving all the original parts so you can resale later if desired.

I'm all for personalizing things to your liking. As long as it's done well, go ahead and mod it how you please.
Worse case scenario you mod, decide to sell, and you don't get quite as much money for it as you would unmodded.

Something that old should be left alone in my view, and this is coming from a guy that mods! I’d sell it as is and then get something newer (eg 2203x) that you can take the drill and iron to to your hearts content.

Then the old stuff that’s yours can be left alone, right? 😊👍
