Maybe you should boycott Mesa boogie...
You might be not so far off with this and it's an notable aspect. Let me tell you why:

It's already been back in the eary 80' and it might be just rumors - means, that also I don't know definitely...
... but at that time stories were floating around, that the actual originator and master mind of the overdriven preamp tube stage not Randy Smith of MESA/Boogie has been, but Howard Alexander Dumble, just by experimenting w/ Fender amps deactivating the reverb circuit, to put the remaining tube in line.
But, as the rumor (or the truth) says Randy has heard about this from a Musician, who's been here and there and then quickly quickly has pendet a patent on this.

I'm still curious, wheter it's rumor or truth.

Anyway - later it turned out, that MESA became big & bigger, but meanwhile the salesclerks throw a MESA behind you, if you leave the shop w/o one, whereas the prices of used Dumble's are growing up to the sky.

I remember hearing that Mesa took something from Bogner and patented it so Bogner couldn't use his own idea, but I don't remember what it was?

To me copy someone else efforts is bad as take a deposit of 2k YEARS before an amp can be made and shipped

You know people can make grown up decisions themselves, and if they do make a decision to put 2K down on an amp build years in advance, they are 100% responsible for that decision. AFAIK Larry doesn't hold people at gunpoint. Well the gunpoint thing might be debatable giving how he responded to you

Question is I suppose, did they know they were years out before dropping the deposit?

Even copy others designs isn't illegal. We were talking only about moral... i think?
So for me is a fair play :D

You might be thinking of Peavey which was what we know as the thump/resonance control - low frequency negative feedback control in the power amp. Bogner has to go with an 'excursion switch' with preset values instead of having the control variable.

I feel like I'm missing who ripped him off besides maybe doctors? Are you referring to his specs/design?

I love Jon's Tone...always have. I used to look for Larry amps around 98-2000 all the time and could never find dick. That being said, sounds like throwing huge money and waiting 2-3 years for an amp bothered some. I agree. that's just too long for me. And you know now more than 10 years ago, people want everything now! With amazon, internet, and other stuff, they get stuff fast.

PS: The wifey got me Alive in Athens vinyl for Christmas...huge fan. tones are tight and delicious

I have never really listened to iced earth, so over the past couple days I have been checking them out, wow, huge, thick, but totally articulate. I dig those tones. Are those mostly Larry amps?

That's probably it, but I thought it had something to do with a variac?

why is krull not banned?
mods should clean this thread up wtf?

Jon is not only mostly, but exclusively using my DINO amps since 1995 - since Burnt Offerings.
Only the first 2 IE albums from 1990 & 1992 haven't been recorded with Larry.
Live overseas he's using his Jon Schaffer Signature preamps I've built for him, running into lent Marshall amps as power amps, to save shipping cost.
There was only one exception within this quarter of a century, as iirc on the Glorious Burdon he's additional used a Splawn for some tracks.
Jon meanwhile owns 5 DINO heads, one Larry British Purist and two JS Sig preamps - and he's payed all this gear, since I don't give endorsements to nobody.
Even Kirk Hammet has paid his amp in full.

Check out Demons and Wizards, is Jon’s music with Hansi (lead singer from Blind Gaurdian) on vocals. Amazing stuff, wore it out. The first album (self titled) they put out is my favorite, every song.

I second this. Right after the 1st D&W I like best Alive in Athens.

I got the #3 ( c+) back in the day. Randy was gone, and got a call from frank who was the order/customer support dude if I wanted my new build more aggressive and meaner than factory spec. He said it was over the top. Of course I said yes, and ordered 2 more. He did explain it but that was along time ago and I was a teenager and not into the techie side of it. Wish I had kept those #3, 6 and 7.
