Tone Talk 1-3-2025 Jose Arredondo Daughter

do you still have that marshall? id hold on to it if you do. sounds like he's too busy to do the mod and my guess is the 'custom shop' is a way to get paid a bit higher for the reputation he's built (rightfully so) without paying the dealers a cut. therefore, not as much of an incentive to mod old marshalls going forward.
I was just at his shop a few weeks back to pick up a repair, and there were at least 10 Marshalls in the waiting room that had just come to him all with post it notes of the requested mods. I get the impression modding old Marshalls is Dave’s lifeblood and passion and that won’t be changing anytime soon.

absolutely agreed, also when I first reached out he told me I didn't even have to go the vintage route, I could just get one of the new '59 reissues or whatever and that'll be a fine place to start at. He's a super reasonable and accessible person. And he still answers all the emails from friedmanamplification's gmail account himself!!!

Yeah they mostly appeared to be newer Marshalls, though I’m no expert

I sure do still have them...I almost sold the two Marshalls he modded for me a few weeks back but somewhere between plugging in to them to do clips for people and almost having a deal finalized...I realized what I'd be missing.
I flirted with the idea of selling one of my mine, then yanked it after a day when I came to my senses. I won’t sell anything for ages, then I’ll decide I have too much junk and will purge 5 head units in a week. It’s either “nothing for sale” or “everything must go” around here 🤣

That thing is BADASS!!! and I'm the same way lol...some days I just feel like I need to get rid of this cause I can't play worth a lick and then the next day I plug in to it and its all oh my god it sounds so good....I must be retarded lol I have no idea but I understand the sentiment man!

That’s a ‘74 100W. The headshell was cracked in shipping when I originally bought it, so I had it repaired and retolexed in orange.

I’m fortunate to have more gear than I need, and I’ll buy and try a bunch of stuff, then get lazy about selling. Like you, I get in a mood when junk piles up and just start liquidating stuff 😄 Not many things are sacred around here, but I do have a small-ish stash of things that will stay permanently.

Hahahahaha I was so freakin nervous when I was shipping my amps to Dave for modding. I'm so happy to hear it was just the head shell on yours dude. I sweated the entire time the amps went to him and back. the people that live near him are so freakin lucky. I'd be in his shops with tequila, donuts, and tacos every day if I could lol

same sentiment on gear man...lucky to have tried everything I've ever wanted. there will always be some unobtainium and that's ok because it keeps the heart young lol

that thing is badass btw dude, is that a Cantrell mod based on the JBE tag I see?

I hear you! It was modded by Dave originally back in 2010 or so. The headshell had a fan in the side, and it was poorly packed, so of course it cracked. There’s a great local shop here that’s done tons of work for me that removed the fan, patched the hole, fixed the headshell, and restored it in orange. Could have bought a new headshell, but for the same money (less?), I got to keep the original and get an aesthetic I wanted, so that was an easy win.

After that, I sent it to Dave to add a few extra things. It’s not a straight JBE, but can do that. It has:

BE Modded w/2 Volume & Gain Knobs
Switchable Bright Cap on Each Gain Knob
Simple Clean
Depth/Thump Knob on Front
JBE by Pulling Thump Knob
HBE Switch
C45 Switch
SAT Switch
Global Master Volume on Back
FX Loop
Line Out with Level Control

So you can switch from clean to dirty, then can switch between 2 sets of gain and masters in the dirty. Each dirty channel has a pull switch to add in a bright cap.

The Depth/Thump on the left is set to BE values, or you can pull it and it swaps to JBE. Put the depth around 1:00-2:00, pull the knob, and turn on SAT and you basically have a JJ100.

The cool thing is you also have the bright caps available for a little extra, and can switch in C45. I jokingly call it JJ+ mode running the bright caps, C45, and depth pulled and set a little higher than stock 😄 I rarely even use the extra gain stage (HBE).

dude holy crap that is truly the kitchen sink setup with all of dave's mods....share some clips when/if you get a chance please!!!

that orange is so freakin cool btw!!! I only have sad black tolex amps lol

Not sure if anyone here knows.. but.. did jose mod the negative feedback system when he originally modded these amps?

I can't speak for Dave (obviously lol) but in the times I've asked him if he'll ever stop doing mods, he seems to have suggested he won't. I think he wants to follow the bruce egnater path where he's just happily modding stuff and building stuff into his later years. that's just my two cents though!
I just emailed him asking if he would do the Pink Taco mod to a Runt50. The 20 watt head is the only downside Im thinking. I dunno

dude if he can physically do it, in my experience he will! now he might tell you to wait until after namm or something but he's always been super accommodating!

I hope it turns out fantastic, and dude 20 Watters are killer unless you just need more headroom for some reason

Pretty damn exciting. I’m definitely going to try to get on the list, but I’m sure to miss it any announcement.

I got back my 84 JCM800 from him several months ago. Love it. Been meaning to do a NAD.

just based on what other 20W he has .. all are small versions of an existing line. The SS doesn't seem to get talked about a lot so maybe a
"cheaper" version might make sense

Dude the Steve Steven’s imo is the coolest of all his amps and a total sleeper! V1 and v2 I think are both incredible. A 20watt version would be way cool!

Dude would love to hear some clips to compare to my ‘83 JCM 800 he modded!

agree ... I never see it talked about outside of when the new version first came out

Talked with Dave today and he said yeah, he could do that Mod for me (pink taco mod to the Runt50) Said it would be a couple months . But would be glad to do it (y)
Going to get back with me on pricing

The 20 watt may be ok for me but there is a chance I'm jamming with this guy at work who plays drums, and his brother plays bass.. So, 50 watts seems more up my alley.

Nice dude, I know it’ll be a bit but every thing he’s modded for me has been top notch! Well worth the wait imo!!

I know Dave said he was the only one who has access to the Friedman email. I didn't expect him to get back so soon but he did.
I'm wanting a Plexi and modern sound in one amp. Quality matters also (y)
