Tones you hated, but now like...

I originally didn't like Timo Tolkki's Stratovarius Laney tones, but now I love them.

I think i just didn't like the brittle thinness of them at the time

Everyone's tone sounds the fucking same now, so it seems like a brilliant move to zag when everyone is zigging now
He mentioned in a recent interview that he recorded Episode with a Mesa Quad pre. He also said that he bought the Quad after finding out that John Petrucci used Boogies.

I always thought that album was also some Laney amp.

IIRC he used a laney AOR on all the early stuff, the quad on episode, and a Laney GH on visions

Every album Stratovarius released from Twilight time until Infinite (early 90s to early 00s) is absolutely classic, must have power metal

They fucked over Jim Martin on that album and intentionally buried his guitars. I was told it was a big reason for his departure from the band. One of my favorite albums ever, but it would be cool to hear it remixed with the keyboards potted down and the guitars more upfront.
His guitars are very buried on "midlife crisis" but some of the other tracks I think they are mixed fine, like "caffeine". Apparently Jim wasn't around much during the making of the album.

That's when I started really getting into Pantera
Same here, around 96 is when I started getting into Pantera. TGST is a crushing album. I too felt the tone was a bit abrasive at first, but I learned to really dig it after repeated listening, it's perfect. BTW that's the only song that really sounds like a wizard mtl, the rest of the album sounds like Randall to me. Talking about hells wrath.

Dokken Back for the Attack / particularly the opening track Kiss of Death. That record was released in the heyday of overly compressed, overly processed gained out tones (which I LOVED at the time). So for my ears, that record sounded so raw and open and uncompressed. I just didn't know what to make of that guitar sound at the time. Now I absolutely LOVE the guitar tones on Back for the Attack for that very reason. I could say the same thing about the first Badlands album. Kinda' went against the grain of the racks and processors and gained out Mesa Mark Series and Soldano tones of the day. Almost sounded 'boxy' by comparison. Now I love that album.

G. Lynch and J.E. Lee were both a bit before my time, but I went back and "discovered" them a while back. Loved their style and attack. I looked up the isolated guitar tracks on YouTube and was genuinely surprised at how dry, wirey and under-gained those tones actually are. All the players nuances and personality really shines through.

Most of Insomnium's older stuff.
This is one of my favorite bands, but their old tones are kind of an acquired taste.

Funny, but I used to hate the tone of Marshalls and Marshall style amps when I was younger as I leaned more into modern metal styles.

After my taste switched to Hair/Glam Metal & AOR completely it became my favorite tone.

lol,lol,lol. Agree mostly

What ever happened to the Kemper?

It's sitting in my recording room until I can afford to send it to someone else who needs it - I lost my (good) job and unfortunately I can't seem to sell anything, so it's getting used until someone needs it more
