I can't believe no one has mentioned Buddy Rich yet. That seems to me to be a gross oversight on everyones part.

I kind of figured we were talking about living drummers, then you would also have to mention gene crupa

What!?!?

No one said Ted Kirkpatrick yet?
This must be it, I'm officially an old fart. :aww:

and i think i'm with eddie d. on the nod to sean rickman...the drum tones and mix on powers of ten live are atrociously bad, but the playing is filthy.
And the frightening part is that he's as good a guitaisy...

I did, and yes it is...

The only drummer that ever 'stands out' to me is Nico from Maiden.

You are the only one the mentioned Weckl. Kudos.

However....you didn't mentioned Peart. -1.

I know some "purists" don't like to mentioned Peart since he is on almost every fanboi's list by default....yes everyone has heard and airdrummed "2112". And he certrainly wasn;t the FIRST to play like that.

But he influenced SOOooOO many people...not just drummers...not just musicians. PEOPLE! That is a true sign of greatness. To affect so many people in all walks of life.

Put on your copy of R30...and select "der trommler"...and tell me he isn't one of the very best drummers around.

Still.

After all these years!

That would be like Jordan playing NBA ball until he was....50.

:oh" ...maybe you don't have R30. Shame.

Sorry, can't do 5.

John Bonham
Ian Paice
Phil Rudd
Jean-Paul Gaster (Clutch)
Gene Hoglan
Danny Herrera (Napalm D.)
Bill Ward
or...insert any number of session players for James Brown and Stevie Wonder

Too many good drummers out there for me to narrow it down....but here's a list of drummers that have moved/inspired/influenced my drumming:

Dave Culross - begins and ends with this guy for me. One of the early blasters....has lightning fast feet and throws in tasty fills and jazz influences into death metal.

Alex Van Halen - THE reason I started playing drums in the first place. I can't hear a song off '1984' and not want to immediately jump on my kit.

Kevin Talley - the guy's kinda of a whore jumping from band to band....but holy shit can this guy play. I've had the pleasure of seeing him play with Dying Fetus, Suffocation & Misery Index live and was utterly shocked each time.

Stewart Copeland - his hi-hat work and wet snare sound are absoutely tasty. 'Spirits in the Material World' has easily one of the best snare sounds ever.

Steve Asheim - waaaaaaay underrated. Nothing terribly flashy but this guy is borderline autistic-savant with some of his chops.

deicide was always (to me) the sloppiest death metal band around...except asheim...he seemed always on point.

I've got a random bootleg video of some show they did in Tampa at some lame venue....but for the most part, it is a Steve Asheim clinic. He was absolutely in the zone, completely calm, and just flying. But yeah, the rest of those numbskulls just didn't do much for me.

Was Kevin Talley in Chimaira for a brief time??

If its the same dude, I met him briefly and he seemed to be
a very cool dude!! And killer drummer.
