Sure isn't really an appropriate response to a question like this, especially when pushed to make a statement. It could have been a chance for Trump to take clear control of these racist accusations once and for all. Instead he asked for "a name", and told "Proud Boys" to stand by. He could have said "I denounce white supremacy or racism of any kind," and we'd all rightfully praise him for that. He instead fanned the flames and made many people of color in this country extremely uncomfortable.
It was a bit vague, but Trump has said many time he is against racism and white supremacy.
Also, the Proud Boys isn’t a racist or white supremacy group. Here is a link to an article talking with an African American chairman of the Proud Boys.
