SVB’s issue is that they invested in long term treasuries. When rates go up, bond prices go down. So when they had a run on withdrawals, they had to sell at a loss (vs holding to maturity getting par value). SVB was almost like a venture capital firm. Which is why multiple banks are not really failing…although a few are in the same situation.

Linda and I bought our first home in 1991. We were both 30-31.
Getting the mortgage approved took weeks and lots of going back and forth
explaining every stinking minuscule black mark on our credit history.
We were barely approved.
Mid 2000s we could have gotten a juicy mortgage simply if we smiled wide enough at the banker.
It was ridiculous who they were letting buy homes.
