I agree it can be helpful to have an idea of how they play, but I’ve had a decent amount of friends that are bad players (they admit it themselves) with surprisingly great ears for tone and appreciation of nuances (some that I didn’t even initially pick up on when we’ve hung out), yet also really good players without much of an ear for tone, so I don’t care much how good of a player they are. Usually the good players that actually get tone IME have good feel/expressive nuance rather than just technical competence like most supposed “great”, but sterile players anyway. It makes sense to me that those types of players often think about gear more functionally than tonallyi dont know how you can truly trust ones opinion if you havent heard them play i dont think these pro youtubers and a few guys here clips suck. i cant trust forum guys who would never say a bad thing about an amp as long as they own it, when was the last time you saw a new amp day that was anything other than the new best amp only to see a month later how the dude couldnt get rid of it fast enough before you even knew he sold it? all im saying is i couldnt tell you right now where to hear a XTC or Uber despite their rep in the guitar world
I also try to stay away from exaggeration, internet hyperbole or bs honeymoons with gear, so I certainly won’t make those types of NAD threads. I ignore the guy’s that exaggerate a lot on gear forums (too many sadly). That’s an instant red flag to me when guys exaggerate. If anything I try to bring attention more to what I feel are an amp’s tonal shortcoming (they all have some) even if overall I think it’s an exceptional amp. I trust guys who have approaches more like that who are levelheaded and have at least some structure to it
