Update on the COD+!

Ok here is the deal. Tightened up the low end and added about 8db of gain to the B channel. Thats about all we can get out of her. Most pedals ie...SD1, Bad Monkey etc are probably close to 12db. So it's at the max at 8 db. Mind you I am doing this with the Bliss PAF about 8K output. Seems like the masses are using 30K pu's...JK so the preceived gain level will be higher with you gain heads!

It takes off and squeals when you are in front of it due to the boat load of mid range and the amount of gain. So I am going to send out 6 next week to random clients, both from the board and our endorsees.

I want feedback on how it is eq'd. Not add more gain, we can not do it. It will have to be a complete redesign and a lot more time. The Mark series is done very complicated in the circuit and as you all know we dont have the time in 08 to do a new board design. So this is it other than eq tweaking. Just want everyone to know.

Cool report. Definitely interested in hearing it. Jeff, did only channel B get more gain, or channel A as well?

I hope I'm a random client!!!! HAHAHA!!! I can't wait to hear it! I really love the COD. I think w/ some EQ adjustments, it will rock w/ the increased gain!!

What eq adjustments...less mids and tighter bass?

Tried to keep A the same but it has a bit more gain than COD.

Out of curiosity, is it possible for channels A and B to both be high gain? Sort of like E-Rect...

IMHO the mid-range on the COD isn't all that variable. For a "harder rock sound" most would want to be able scoop some of the mids a bit more. The mids on the COD today take away more of the "upper mids" today, but with more of a "small Q" on the size it cuts. Most people want to get that "Metallica / Dream Theater" type of tone w/ Channel B, so you definitely need to cut the mids a bit more sweeping than what it is today. Definitely a tighter bass. I would say not to the level of a EG5 tightness, but much tighter than the COD today.

I personally would shift the midrange frequencies you are working w/ on the mids down range on the EQ spectrum some, and widen the Q of it a bit to match a bit more how the EG5's eq works.

Make sense?

+1 on that. I think most of want the COD+ for high gain "hard rock" rhythm on channel A (with uber gain) and lead (with uber gain and maybe a slight midrange bump over what's in channel A) for "petrucciesque" soloing.

(even though I can get a similar lead tone to petrucci with the SL2 and some verb and delay).

We can not get enought gain to make this happen. Its either B of the COD in the A of COD+ and then B is the high gain, or COD+ on both. The eq changes again will be have to be minor. You can not just add stuff when there is no room in board and just add to the layout. Causes ossiliation and other junk. I will move the mids a bit and listen to it.

From my personal opinion the amount of gain on channel B on the stock COD in channel A of COD+ would be fine, with more gain in Channel B of the COD+. I do understand the issues around board design :). Its an art to make sure things work fine w/ minimal amounts of noise!

I think just lowering the EQ spectrum a bit, and widening the Q will help a lot, which should mainly be able to be fixed with minor resistor changes anyways.

You guys are losing me with all this techno-babble! Writing software is so much easier!

As long as it gives me balls and chunk for that Mark IV Chevelle sound I dont care how!

Well, I've got an EBMM Petrucci model so that should be easy for me to compare... to recordings at least.

Again this is our take on Dumble and Mark II in lead mode. So we are adding gain and removing a bit of mids. If we monkey to much with eq it looses its sing vibe. I am really thinking this is going to be a headache...to many cooks in the kitchen. I will not say this is now the Mark module or JP module. I now know why we make our modules "our version" ~

Technically JP used a Mark IIC in many of his recordings... or was that a IIC+... hmm... anyway... So I guess this should sound more like Santana... or Eric Johnson?
