Are you sure it wasnt a SLO on this? I thought the 3+ was used mostly on cleans and crunch, like spanked. It sounds pretty SLO to me, which has a high mid emphasis and would be most like the PT-100 I would imagine.

That is actually the 3+ preamp prototype in to a Marshall Power section that I tweaked for Lukather. I watched as Ed was recording.
It was Channel 3 of the non SE version, I could build you the exact channel but I think the PT100 would do it no problem in a heatbeat.,
The SLO was only used on the solo on this track

This is really cool info. So is this how it was on most tracks? SLO just for leads or was it a mix of 3+ and SLO depending on the song and/or Eds mood?

The 3+ was used on if I remember correctly 4 of the tracks and pretty much all the rhythm tracks of Dream is over as well as Spank and a few others. We had to take the proto back to finish design of the production preamps.
Ed used the SLO on I believe most of the rest of the record. At least that is what I remember being told. I was there when he was doing some of Dream is over.

Which CAA/Suhr amp closest to the VH "Dream is Over" tone?

what i wanted to know is what other than the $3000 eventide will get a close detune effect
like he got live?
is there any cheaper units that have a real good de-tune for that thick almost chorus tone?
The one in my rocktron intellifex and replifex are OK but
i heard it is +9 and -9 on the fine

Eventide H9 has both the 949 and 3000. If you want to go really cheap get a Digitech iStomp and download the Red Coral effect.

Also, if you want it real cheap and in rack unit form, get a Peavey (1) Addverb III, (2) Tubefex, or (3) TranstubeFex. They all have the stereo detune feature

Eventide Pitchfactor will totally nail the EVH pitch sounds. 910/949, as well as microshift.

Yeah Mike is totally correct here, particularly if you go W/D/W...

The digitech luxe is a good simple detune pedal.

.Just hoping the same thing does not happen as with the rocktrons i have.
right now i have to play mono and when i tried de-tuning on both the intellifex and replifex
i get this flange type quality that i hate!
it makes the pure tone take this weird sound like if you set the rate of a flanger to 0
with the resonance/level on maybe 2.
is this because i am playing in mono?
and the chorus sounds like crap too?

I'll tell you this. I don't care what Ed, Matt Bruck, or Soldano employees say. And I've read a lot since 1991. My Peavey 5150 head with matching 4x12 cab is Judgement Day. Like it or not it nails it with a medium output or higher Humbucker guitar. Most trying to copy it miss the extra gain stages. Which are the double edged sword of the 5150. There was a period of time I hated that about it. Now I've tuned it out. Unless I'm trying to hear it. Like if I'm on a F.U.C.K. kick. Currently I'm into VH II and somtimes I think I hear some of that in my old 5150. But that's another story...

I'm told my Peavey 5150 and EBMM Axis nail the F.U.C.K. tone. I like my old 1987 RG550 better. Sounds closer to my ear.

It should come close, shouldn't it? After all, a 5150 is Peaveys attempt at cloning an SLO....

Yeah i agree especially after watching this,

See, that's where you just can't trust YouTube for tone. Don't get me wrong, I like 5150s...they don't compare to the Soldano. Its not close, at least when you play one then the other. And I have. But bang for the buck 5150s are great, and that trend continues with EVH.

I totally agree!
In person they are NOT the same.
YT is a terrible way to judge tone

I am going to have to duck after this post, but while I love the songs on this one, I hate Eddies tone - way too processed and muddy. I much prefer his tone on Balance, although I would be the first to admit the songs are not as strong.

BTW - everyone mentions the SLO, but didnt he also use a prototype 5150 on this album?

JQ

I thought the SLO was a prototype 5150…….

Can do the detune thing with a midiverb4 on the cheap.

Well that's how we did it in the day.

Surprised no one has brought that up.

Huh.

Midiverb 4. EVH hasn't used a midiverb 4 in his rig. . .ever.

And, yeah the original 5150s were GREAT sounding amps. That's what he was using live from 91-94. The Right Here Right Now live DVD, and FUCK tour were both the 5150 amp.

An alternative to the Pitch Factor for detuning on the cheap is the Yamaha SPX90, which probably was on even more albums and in more pro rigs than the H3000. EVH never used it, sure, but more or less all the other top guns did... and even if it isn´t really the F.U.C.K sound you can recognize the SPX90 from a mile away.
