If this were true, then Ed's current tone would sound like the 1st album - no? If this were true, VH II tone would sound like VH I - no?tommytom11":2z4zdhgt said:go get EVH and have him plug into whatever you have

Yep
Another example was how Allan Holdsworth was a huge influence on him, especially at the time. The outro solo to 'Drop Dead Legs' was parcelled in after the fact and the random jazz noodling was Holdsworth inspired.![]()
The basic concept behind the 5150 studio was to give Eddie more control and Templeton less control. Ed wanted to show Ted that he could make a better album than Ted could. 1984 was essentially the 'coming out' showcase of the 5150 studio.
I'm going to guess that he used an MXR Micro Amp pedal > MXR EQ pedal > amp. Anyone?lespaul6":26dckd9y said:
What do you think he is doing here? seems like a lot of sustain/gain from a 4 holer...
...I was referring to the 1985 David Letterman clip.nitro":1zvnyb40 said:The MXR Micro Amp didn't come out until 1980 Edward couldn't have used it on Van halen 1.Speaking of MXR Micro Amp I have a new in the box MXR Micro Amp if interested send me a pm

When he built 5150, he bought EVERYTHING they recorded their first album on...console, tape deck, outboard gear, monitors, etc, etc, etc...I read that in a recording mag back in the day...then years later there was an interview in one of the guitar mags where he actually said he'd been chasing VH1 this whole time and he can't get it...my feeling is that it is the EMT plate that contributes some sizzle and obviously that wet quality, but Ed's stated he hated reverb, which is why when VHII came out it was gone....replaced by the "jape".
If he were trying to achieve the VH I sound, why would he use a 5150 amplifier?paulyc":27h3tq7k said:EVH CAN'T get that tone...he WANTS it, but he can't get it.
