go get EVH and have him plug into whatever you have
If this were true, then Ed's current tone would sound like the 1st album - no? If this were true, VH II tone would sound like VH I - no?

Idiots will laugh at idiotic comments... No shortage of such ilk here on RT. ;)

Vox AC30

/endthread

Yes! I just ordered a VOX cabinet from North Coast Music today to go with my AC30CCH. K2 KLONE > Bogner Red > MXR Flanger > TTE Tape Echo > VOX AC30 is as close as I've ever gotten. Guytron GT20 does a damn fine job also.

Sounds like the tongue in cheek emoticon has been disabled.

"Drop Dead Legs" being inspired by AC/DC's "Back In Black", for example.

Yep

Another example was how Allan Holdsworth was a huge influence on him, especially at the time. The outro solo to 'Drop Dead Legs' was parcelled in after the fact and the random jazz noodling was Holdsworth inspired.

The basic concept behind the 5150 studio was to give Eddie more control and Templeton less control. Ed wanted to show Ted that he could make a better album than Ted could. 1984 was essentially the 'coming out' showcase of the 5150 studio.

The Holddsworth thing I knew about, EVH was supposed to produce an album for him at some point, but it fell threw because Holdsworth didn't want to wait for Ed to get off the road. Got really ugly between Holdsworth and Templeman for some reason at time, with Ted threatening to punch Holdsworth out if he ever saw him (That from a Holdsworth interview back in the day).

I thought construction of 5150 was a funny story. The city wouldn't ok a recording studio because of zoning, but a racquetball court was ok, so that's what the permit was filed under.

The building inspector commented on that the walls seemed a bit thick and robust for just a racquetball court.

Pete Thorn's demo of the SL68 gets really close - but it's pretty expensive - and LOUD (although they come with master volumes now).

There's a guy on youtube getting really good early VH tone from his Bray modded Plexi -

I just rub my KLON and a genie appears asking what tone Id like.

What do you think he is doing here? seems like a lot of sustain/gain from a 4 holer...

I'm going to guess that he used an MXR Micro Amp pedal > MXR EQ pedal > amp. Anyone?

The MXR Micro Amp didn't come out until 1980 Edward couldn't have used it on Van halen 1.Speaking of MXR Micro Amp I have a new in the box MXR Micro Amp if interested send me a pm

...I was referring to the 1985 David Letterman clip.

Is that why you're selling it? Be honest now.

I imagine he's only running the variac like he always does

A 4 holer can easily get that amount of gain

No, im selling it because I go though gear like candy. As for when the MXR Micro amp came out it came out in 1980.Mxr started in 1972 by Keith Barr and Terry Sherwood, the first pedals were the MXR Phase 90-Mxr Distortion+ MXR Dyna Comp-MXR Blue Box.

EVH CAN'T get that tone...he WANTS it, but he can't get it. When he built 5150, he bought EVERYTHING they recorded their first album on...console, tape deck, outboard gear, monitors, etc, etc, etc...I read that in a recording mag back in the day...then years later there was an interview in one of the guitar mags where he actually said he'd been chasing VH1 this whole time and he can't get it...my feeling is that it is the EMT plate that contributes some sizzle and obviously that wet quality, but Ed's stated he hated reverb, which is why when VHII came out it was gone....replaced by the "jape".

They probably stayed so hammered back then that even Ed can't remember everything he used.
Maybe that's why he says he doesn't like Marshall's anymore, cause he can't cop his own tone he recorded with em.

If he were trying to achieve the VH I sound, why would he use a 5150 amplifier?

The VH I tones sound like a 'slaved' set-up to me. I don't know of any other way to get that level of power tube compression at studio volumes. I think I may actually prefer his tone on VH II.

My late 66 JTM45/100, bone stock, got the same gain, if not more, as the one in the video.

Van Halen tone right here bitches!
