Why are they being taken down? Dave looks happy but in Noel's book he said Ed/Dave hated each other at this point.
Also who are all the gals coming up the steps at the beginning? English support staff? :sneaky: Val is one of the last one in a long very conservative for the 80's dress so i assume they are all girlfriends and maybe part of DLR's bevy?

They did hate each other by this point. Actually, before this point. Fair Warning hints at the darkness and Diver Down had contributions from each in it that the other didn't care for. We should feel lucky the album 1984 was even completed. Remember, Dave despised "Jump". So after a long (150+ date) US tour they end up on Monsters of Rock in Europe. Donington is what you see in this video. 4 shows later, the show in Germany proved to be his last (until the reunion tours). He left officially in April 1985 to pursue is solo career. There is much speculation that he didn't really have a choice.

If you look at the last page of my Van Halen thread in Off Topic favorite music you can see detail that I copied from the YouTube description notes about the cameras used.

As far as the girls, that seems very appropriate for a rock band in 1984 :dunno: And Valerie may have had a conservative dress on but she was no angel. She was perfect for Ed as she like her coke, smokes and drink as well.

PS: Dave is happy because he is probably loaded up on cocaine. But honestly, they were pro performers and part of that is making it look like you are having the time of your life no matter what is going on. I thought Dave's voice sounded OK. For his live sound. He can't hide behind studio tricks, overdubs, and retakes

A couple observations:
*Bash on Dave's vocals all you like, but I think this is better than many other vids we've seen of original VH. And that camera angle throughout the first 2/3 of the set really show how damn hard he worked allll through the set.

*Anybody else think we might be seeing Ed getting fed some blow real quick back by the amps? (even with all those people there) This could be a whole new conspiracy theory on why the VH "camp" (aka- Ed & Alex) don't want these live shows up. We all know the band's excessive coke use is no secret, but seeing Ed ducking over for a quick blast sometimes could definitely be embarassing for him if that was happening, which could explain the heavy defense all this time.

*As much as we all respect Ed's take on keyboards being used in VH and 'artistic expansion'.... this really shows me why Davce wasn't a fan. I know the audio here is poor, but both Jump & I'll Wait sound so weak compared to everything else, not to mention the onstage vacancy of Ed & Mike being stuck behind keyboards. You can feel the entire venue not wanting VH to "grow" in that direction.

Dave got what people who want a perfect vocal performance didn’t get. Entertain. Nothing else matters but you make that audience feel they got an invite to the best party in town. That was VH’s M.O. for the live show. He sure seemed to pull that off on a regular basis. Shit, he’s always been about 40% game show host.

Here's what I dug up . Can't believe I missed the video.

It's not being pulled due to copyright.
It's not being pulled by Van Halen LLC aka Al, Dave or Wolf.

Because I'm a VH nut I went down the rabbit hole last night to figure out what was going on.
It took a long time to sort it out and I don't think I have a complete picture.

It's being pulled under the claim of "unpublished work" by a company not connected with the band, label, or management.

I've seen a screenshot of a YouTube takedown notice for a channel that posted VH video and it shows the
email address and name of the business who filed the claim.
Again, they filed it as a "unpublished work" claim which I didn't even know was a thing.

Using that info I did a lot of searching around the web last night and what I've learned is that the party making the claim has a history of filing the same claim against people that post footage of VH or another classic rock band to YT.
If you search the internet there's posts on forums in that other band's fan community that this party is selling rare audio and video of dubious origin to wealthy collectors so they file the takedowns' to protect their investment and claim of exclusivity.

That's as far as I got, and honestly that was enough. Back when I was a tape trader in the 80s there were always talk about a circle of collectors that hoarded rare material to sell it to the highest bidder. This is nothing new.

I'm just amazed that the surviving members of VH through their representatives aren't all over YouTube and this party to reclaim their audio and video material. But lawyers are expensive and maybe that why nobody from VH is motivated, and nobody who gets a strike on their channels tries to fight it.

^good job

Looks like the one JiMB reposted here got taken down too. Oh well, it will be a never ending battle. Especially this one as it is so rare and also at the height of their collective band at the time.

Here were the Description Notes on the first one that was posted on YouTube Sunday night. Speaking of rabbit holes :D

It's an honor for me to share with you the Holy Grail of 1984 tour footage!
It was shared with me with the instructions to share it with the world because it was being bootlegged and sold on DVD.
This video is not being monetized and it never will be on this channel.

Origins:
This footage was shot 39 years ago with a single camera "documentary" style on 35mm film,
with exc mono sound (maybe stereo, but def not soundboard) probably recorded on a Nagra tape recorder.
The crew consisted of a cameraman, sound recordist and a camera assistant.
The camera operator had only about 10 minutes of film, before he had to switch to a new magazine and continue shooting. That's why there are so many edits.
It's my guess that this footage was paid for by the band for their personal archives, and eventually it was edited and transferred via telecine to videotape.

If you read this photocopy of the ledger from the Van Halen archive at Pacific Title
(https://postlmg.cc/G4SFsYYg) you can see this footage listed at the top of the page.
It lists the length at 67min total, which what this footage is which means that this is all the footage from this camera from this show that exists.

BUT
If you watch this film closely you can see two other camera crews shooting this show.
So you had:
1. This camera, 35mm film, hired by the band.
2. A BBC 35mm film camera, shooting for "Old Grey Whistle Test" in the pit in front of Ed during "Hot for Teacher". That footage is already on YT.
3. A video crew as well shooting for the IMAG video screens at the festival. Those cameras consist of 2 handheld tube video cameras in the pit downstage left and right, as well as a tube video camera on a dolly on Ed's side that doesn't move much. You can see the video truck these cameras were connected to early on in this video behind Ed and Al when they were waiting to go onstage.
Who knows where that footage is?

Read those and you'll know as much as anyone else.
It does not cover what's on the shelves at 5150.
(Yes, Oakland '81 is listed, but not as a complete film, only as a complete multitrack audio recording. Warners only paid to shoot 3 songs, the 3 singles from that album, for promo purposes. There is no complete Oakland '81 film to be had.)

Finally:
Ed and Al created this band.
They are the engine that powered the band from day one until the last gig.
Dave came in with manic energy, financial backing and a vision to
achieve greater glory than backyard parties in Pasadena.
Mike brought musicianship and killer vocals.
In 1984 they were the best rock band on the road.
They earned every bit of success they ever had.

Honor Ed's legacy, and the hard work that Al, Dave and Mike
put in back then by sharing this with fellow fans.
Do not post anything negative or it will be taken down.
I don't care what you like and don't like. This isn't about you.
It's about enjoying rare live footage of Van Halen in 1984.
It's also a celebration of the greatest American rock band of the 20th century.
Enjoy it!

So now a bootlegger can take a video down through copyright claim? What?

What a gem of a guy . Love it .

someone time stamp the cocaine blasts. i want to judge for myself :D

I know there is a good steven tyler "spinning with his scarf" part in an early 80's bootleg live video that is on you tube, where he clearly takes a bump from his scarf. he used to sew cocaine compartments into his scarfs.

I’m sure how fast they started Unchained was purely just nerves…😊
