Man, 7 string recording is really tough IMO. There is something in the tone I'm not diggin'... It kinda reminds me of playing a 7 string through the PeaceMaker, although I know this is a very different amp. Just sounds a bit fuzzy to me and like a 7 string through a vintage style amp. I guess I'm just used to 7 strings sounding so crushing through 5150s and the like...
Steve
Well, the Deliverance certainly has a vintage vibe to it although on rhythms, I think there's a modern "bark" also, but I know what you're talking about. There's a vintage twang to it that I think is unappealing to many people. I'm not sure I hear the fuzziness, but I know what you're talking about. This tone doesn't have that top end evenly compressed type of tone (although I could get more in the mix by compressing the guitars) like a 5150 or an Engl has.

It was the idiot, here.
Loaded finally--
Great stuff, Savage--as usual. And again, I dig your drums. (and your playing aint too bad either)
Thanks Mike. I wish I could claim those drums as my own, but that's John Bonham.

The rhythm tone is too woofy/muffled sounding. It needs more crunch and bite IMO. I hated how the VHT I had sounded in low tunings. The lead tone in your clip was nice though.
Yes, your hatred of all that is VHT is well documented. I know what it is you're wanting to hear and while I like that tone too, I'm not really unhappy with the way this sounds. I'll make some adjustments going forward like possibly increasing the gain on the amp, etc. I recorded this with more only an SM57, which I don't usually do because I like additional top end but being the first 7 string clip through the amp, I wanted to stick with the basics.

Hey Bob, sounds nice but I also have problems dialing in a nice tone for the rhythm using a 7 string. I end up with a tone that has a fizzy high end that's very annoying. The lead is great though.
I'm not hearing a lot of fizz in the room, but there's a few things I think need to happen for the next recording. 1) Raise the bridge pickup 2) A slight increase in gain on the amp as well as middle and treble changes and 3) Record with more than just an SM57.

the rhythm tone almost sounds like it was recorded too hot. had a similar thing happen when I first recorded my VHT 50/CL I had for awhile. though, I've not successfully recorded any VHT clips that I like on their own(with the 50 or my 100/CL)...not that I've really spent any time at all. mixed with my other amp it sounds great, which is what matters I guess cause that's how I run them. it does bug me a little though.
I think part of what's causing some of these comments is the bass tone. The guit was definitely not too hot in the mic pre input or the interface, but the bass guitar has a "woof" to it that I think is blending with and walking on the guitar (or perhaps it's vice verse). I may throw up a mix of just the guitars for you guys to hear, we'll see how lazy I am today.
Thanks for specific comments guys, I do appreciate it and while I'm not as unhappy with this tone as it seems most people are, I do need to do some additional sculpting before I'm content with it for 7 string. This amp will never be a 5150, an Engl or an Uberschall (that amp excelled at tunings lower than E, in my opinion), I think I can get to where I want it to be, even if it takes a small boost in front of the amp.
