Why do so many players have to switch on an auto wah, wah wah, or envelope filter on every solo and keep it on for the full solo? Is it because it helps to cut through the mix better, fills out the lead tone, or hides the player's mistakes? I guess many in the audience do not notice it or know what it is. For me it takes away from the players ability. It doesn't matter how good I feel the player is, all I hear is the wah and want it off. I much prefer it being used tastefully. It seems many are guilty of this.

Who is this Kurt Hammet you speak of?
Kirk, not Kurt. Double T in Hammett Typo  He made the wah wah famous right?

Because it hides mistakes and makes simple pattern pentatonics sound more complicated then they are. I have heard many players tell me they love way and can't get enough of it. It is a snore to listen to and should only come in for parts of solos or gradually in a sweeping way. All the great players know this... The rest do not.

Makes sense, especially about the basic pentatonic scales.

Cantrell uses the wah a lot and sounds awesome, to me at least. Wah can be used to make the notes more expressive.

You continue to amaze me with all of your "absolutes". Glad your opinions are always the "right" ones.

And I don't know about people "hiding" behind stuff. I mean I guess everyone is hiding behind stuff in rock then (gain). Guess everyone should be playing clean acoustic guitar with 13s

Geez thanks for correcting someones spelling on a guitar forum. Any more brain busters ? Yes,the wah pedals are cool and addicting.

I like a way used in moderation to add to the dynamics of a solo

Cantrell is great with that. Subtle wah or vibe pedal use is money, just like the voice box.

Man in the Box

Great heavy song.

Rooster, great subtle vibe use.

It is just another tool to master. Some just use it like a sledge hammer all the time

When the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.

Maybe it was the just the guitarist I saw recently using them. It just seemed off to me but you guys are right, I never thought that about Cantrell. These few guys I saw recently were not using it in a manner that sounded musical to me. And Hendrix wouldn't have been Hendrix with the Wah. True.

There are definitely some crap players who use it to mask how boring they are. I think that's one reason I always shyed away from using one. I've got one now, though, and use it for exactly one solo and one other section in a 3-set night...lol. Hell, I didn't even use it for that solo last night, and it was the best version I'd ever done....lol. It's fun, but only used sparingly and used well. Definitely takes practice to be expressive.

Do you still have a hard on from the vai thread? Grow up man, he asked for people's opinions and I gave one. If rockin a wah back and forth all day is your thing then have at er'. I happen to think people lean on the wah as a crutch. I am sorry if it disagrees with all that is right in your world.

For the record , I like wah. Just not in every solo and constantly pumped. The foot can't always keep the same tempo alla Kirk Hammett. I like it when it is sweeped or used to emphasize a run. Satriani uses it well for example, hell vai does too. Hammett and wylde ( since pride and glory anyways) do not... In my opinion of course ;)

Slash and Dimebag used it properly. Hammett and Wylde just sound Disco-metal.

I like Hammett's solos. The guy has his own thing going on and I like it.

I use one when covering Dirt, Bulls on Parade and Electric Funeral (oddly enough, all three of those songs are considered poor use of Wah by the rules proposed in this thread), but I seldom use one on my own because I can't figure out how to not sound like cheeze when doing it.

You need to grow up man..you make statements of opinions as absolutes. Or maybe learn to express yourself in a more open way. What you "think" isn't always correct, it's your OPINION but you make statements in your posting as facts...see your thread above.
