Awesome cover, sounds great!

Sure, the lead sounded a little fizzy and the rolled back volume parts weren't quite the same, but overall it's as close as any EVH clip I've heard. The entire band was as dead on as a cover band can be. The tone was perfect for that song.

I've heard great sounding POD stuff on record, but a POD sounds and FEELS like shit for live work.

All of you guys saying you can tell it is digital... It sure is easy when someone tells you upfront that it is a PODXT, huh?

Steve
Funny how that works aint it :D

I think the POD is a cool tool. I use Gear Box at home from time to time, and I can dial in some good tones. I prefer to use an amp, but I'm no hater by any means.

heck, i think overall, EVERYTHING sounds great, vocals, backup vocals, guitar..... just an incy-tincy bit of fizz on those solos, but otherwise excellent.

:m4:

Its good sounding... But.... The top end sounds weird to me and the upper mids arent as thick sounding as they should me IMO.

It grates on my ears. That's the worst thing about Pods. The fizz is extremely harsh. Not only does it make the guitar less clear, but it calls attention to itself and stabs my ear drums.

There are ways to tame it, but not really so much with the Pod itself. If Line6 would just address that, instead of trying to impress the limp wristed, open palm mute flogging retard at GC with a swarm of bees, they'd actually be pretty usable.

The crunch channel on the Spider III combos actually seems better about that, but that's like their cheapest product. I'm sure they could do MUCH better.

I hear it, but it's not nearly as bad as a Mesa Recto amp fizz, and there's no way to fix the Recto box-o-bees.

Oh heck yes!!! I'm glad you posted it was a POD because it made it easier to show you guys how good my ears are. I heard the 0's and 1's, yes, I did. This is what I heard:

100010101 00010110011 1100101001 0100101010010101010 100100101 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 00001111010001010010101

Actually, I think I've got an extra 0 in that last phrase, but the rest is on the money.

Damn.... you are GOOD! There was an extra 0 in that last phrase. Well, done!

Steve

I don't recall Rectos remaining fizzy like that if you aren't using a lot of gain.

The problem with Pods is that you turn it down, and the fizz is still there. Even the cleans have that harshness to them. Part of it is just the general way it's EQed. Just cutting that doesn't totally fix it, though, because there's more to it than that.

On the MetroAmp forum the guy who did this clip didn't tell what it was at first and those guys, who will change a resistor based on a single clip, were freaking out over this clip. The first "sounds digital" post didn't come until people knew what it was...

Just sayin'...

Sounds great!
Me thinks that isn't just the PODxt alone, there's some EQ and fiddling afterwards.

Absolutely. It was enhanced through standard recording techniques like EQ, but I'd do that with an amp too If needed...

I'm not bashing it, I just mean that you couldn't walk on stage with the PODxt alone and have it sound like that.

Oh, I didn't think you were and I agree that you would much prefer the sound of, for example, Ralph's Metro build live. This clip kinda points out the futility of clips in general. Recorded sound does not equal live sound. I've never heard a PODXT live rig sound as good as a real amp. In a clip however... well... that is a different story as we hear in this clip...

This is part of what eludes many. The tone being chased is a fully produced sound on an album. If your amp sounds identical to that in the room it's going to sound very different if you put a mic on it. Even in the room, only part of the room is going to hear "the tone" because guitar cabs project poorly, IMO.

OH, and Randy's a basher!!!! bash bash bash...

I agree, the sound out of your cab wouldn't sound like the VH tone on record, it would be more raw...the miked tone through the PA system (with EQ, reverb and stuff added) would be 'the tone'

If I went to Hollingshead, I would sit next to Steve....he is nicer.
