I know others disagree, but I do not like a single original metallica song recorded since AJFA
They recorded some cool covers - especially the Diamond Head and Mercyful Fate ones
But their actual records and songs have been completely anodyne and missing a spark of something original or poignant
It's actually kind of weird because you would think they would LUCK into something cool

I actually think he's a great writer but Dave's heavy compositions are better than anything James can come up with in that Thrash/Speed vein. Hetfield is miles ahead of him in the vocal department. But Dave is also a better guitar player than the petite Mexican grandmother they've been using for decades now.

Kirk's guitar playing was honest to god better 40 years ago at the beginning of his career
It's almost like he's specifically fucked off his development as a musician just to see if he can get away with it, or if anyone will notice
And it drives me insane because he lucked into the single greatest gig in all of heavy music and could not be fucked to practice a little bit, once in a while

Yep, sounds great. And though his vocal is not Hetfield level he writes stuff that his vocal works for. The riffage and solos hearken back to when Metallica was Metallica not a hard rock Bob Seger tribute act. He still cares, and he is still getting better and better at songwriting, his vocals, and gutiar-wise.
