What can't James Hetfield do?

Just noticed yesterday that Marty is playing at what is basically a bar gig next month locally. I am going. Saw that while I was looking at Lynch tickets at the same venue that is coming up in 5 days. Will go to that one as well. Why the hell not?

James can’t say no to Lars’s flamboyant whims, be it the makeup from the Load era, stupid money losing endeavors (Orion festival, Through the Never Movie, etc) or baffling musical directions to take (Lulu, St. Anger, and the general reluctance in taking heavy bands out on tour).

Antones? I think I saw both of those guys listed on their calendar.

I'm pleasantly surprised. Whether he could make it happen all night or not is another story.

dude as someone who has spent a lifetime (edit: attempting to poorly) learning his solos, they are all basically ace frehley blues licks on steroids...i promise he can play blues all night

He can't play leads?

Seriously though, something I think about is that from my observation at least, in order for a band to get to be the biggest in their genere they have to be good - and have that special sauce - but they can't be too good. In other words, the more technical a player is the less mainstream appeal they'll have. Bands like Metallica, AC/DC, the Police, hell Taylor Swift etc. are in that sweet spot. bands like Dream Theater will never be any bigger because they're too technical for the average person. As for Megadeth my opinion is that while their extra technicality isn't helping them be bigger, there's something unattractive about the actual anger & resentment Dave holds in his heart that subconsciously turns people off. Regardless of the lyrical content I'm more interested in people that are fundamentally happy.

I know others disagree, but I do not like a single original metallica song recorded since AJFA

They recorded some cool covers - especially the Diamond Head and Mercyful Fate ones

But their actual records and songs have been completely anodyne and missing a spark of something original or poignant

It's actually kind of weird because you would think they would LUCK into something cool

You can say this for most every band 5+ albums deep into their career.

I actually think he's a great writer but Dave's heavy compositions are better than anything James can come up with in that Thrash/Speed vein. Hetfield is miles ahead of him in the vocal department. But Dave is also a better guitar player than the petite Mexican grandmother they've been using for decades now.

Agreed. I love old Cliff-era Metallica, and I think Jason could have been a heavyweight too if they would have let him off their leash. Since AJFA though, Megadeth's music has been more interesting than Metallica's.

I would agree with "alot of bands"

but "most every band" is just obfuscating how bad late period metallica is by saying "other bands fell off too"

That's like saying "Yeah I know OJ killed his wife, but I know LOTS of guys who have fights with their ex!"
