The only band in the last 17 years is Foo Fighters

Even if a newer band has a cool song or riff, that's about it. Just nothing lasting, special or iconic about them.

What the fuck is going on??

Well let's see... There's Dark New Day, Big Wreck, Thornley, Alter Bridge, People In Planes and Porcupine Tree to name a few. Great bands are still out there, they just don't get AOR play anymore. It's the era of disposable pop music and rap. THe sheep would rather listen to the flavor of the day instead of think. You just have to dig a little deeper these days.

I've been asking the same question since around 1989.

I have been asking the same question since 1994. Kinda found it withe all the European power metal bands. Melodicrock.com is a good source for more aor type of music. As others have said, you gotta dig to find it now. Internet radio is a good source but regular radio - a joke.

I hate that I was born in 1989. I can never truely appreciate the good days of music

You cant know if something is lasting or Iconic until they have a good depth of work. All those classic bands you listed have had the luxury of existing for decades unlike the bands of today. Not to mention those bands have gotten airplay for years and years. Any of those bands could have been one and done and know one would have remembered them.

Plenty of good music still around. My tastes have changed as I've gotten older, but that doesn't reflect on the state of music in general.

On top of that, the days of listeners only being spoonfed a handful of 'premier' acts is over. Thank god.

And the autotune pop song.

If you look at most people they think the music they heard when they were about 15-25 years old is the best. So that means I am just too old to appreciate most of 'today's' music.

If you can't hear it, you aren't listening.

Furthermore, with the possible exception of Sabbath, Hendrix, and a small handful of others on your list, the modern day bigs traded looks, outfits, and gimmicks for composition and creativity. What a terrible time in music.

Op did say GnR. I wouldn't say they have much depth of work. Honestly, I would almost consider them one and done. Lies was a joke. The Spaghetti Incident? Joke. Use Your Illusion? Pompous, blustery and full of self indulgence (not that I didn't enjoy it). We won't even mention Chinese Democracy.

GnR makes it's name off of AFD. Period.

The songwriting is just not there anymore.

The iconic frontman and guitarist combo that was in the past is not there.

Slash slaps together a solo disc and it has some of the best rock songwriting in ages that destroys current bands.

The current crop of one finger barre chord masters and nameless growling frontmen are just no match for the great songwriting of the past. Period

Give me the best of even Ratt, Dokken, Triumph and even fucking Tears For Fears over these current bands. lol

The reason rock is dying is because the current bands songwriting sucks!!

If it wasn't for wanting to check out their amps/gear , who would give a fuck?

I blame the attention span of consumers. Everyone's looking for the next hot song and no one is making a career out of music anymore, or at least a career as a rock star. The bands are looking to make that one score to get known and make a bit of money before sinking back into nothingness.

I also blame the lack of truly magnetic and identifiable frontmen/singers. Mostly what's out there now are posers and wannabe punks that think acting like an entitled little brat makes you "edgy".

Where are the DLR's, Ozzy's, Dio's, Staley's, etc., etc?

Still are plenty of really good bands it's they are not getting major air play. Great thing about this day and age of the internet you can find them when it was really hard back in the day of just reading magazines or just trying out cassettes.

There is good, new hard rock. Check out The Living End as well as Wolfmother. They're both from Australia and are fantastic bands. They're not brutal. They are melodic. They both write catchy riffs and are just great hard rock.

The guys from A7X aren't bad either.

I wouldn't exactly call Wolfmother and The Living End unknown   Plus they're really more pop now than anything hard. I wish I could get into Airborne but they're just so damn derivitive I hate 'em. I think The Darkness had a chance at being a modern rock classic but like GnR, another one and done band.

Topic is way too subjective. I don't listen to most those bands you put up there. I also hate most classic rock bands. But I didn't grow up in that time. I like a lot of bands out there today. I also hate a lot of them. I'm all about the lyrics and a way a song is put together. If there are epic guitar parts in there, that's fine. If not, I don't care either. But either way it Needs to add to a Song. A lot of the bands that just throw in these epic solos make it sound like it's there just to be showy and it's not adding to the song. For Me It's about my emotional connection with a song. To me, it may be the best song ever but be the easiest song to play. Others may have a different opinion.
