What's everyone using for 'In-Room' recordings?

I've got the Zoom Q2n and for my limited purposes, I could not be happier with it. I think it does a really nice job of capturing louder, higher gain amp sounds. I also like the fact that when anyone listens to something I have posted, they have a better idea of what the amp and rig actually sounds like in the room without a bunch of post-processing, eq'ing, effects, etc.

As cheap as my Q2 was - I am not opposed to a Q8 ... maybe for Christmas??

The Q2 is a workhorse for sure. I bought mine right after they came out, maybe 8 years ago? It has no problem handling insane volume without clipping, whether it be loud amps with multiple speaker cabs or loud cars/burnouts. So far the built in mics on the Q8 have taken everything I've thrown at them without clipping, and that's using the default settings on the Q8.

I am using a rode videomic pro and a DSLR with a cable between the mic and the camera both on separate stands so I can move the camera and mic independently.

I have gotten great results. 4k video too, and the can be set to different sensitivities.

Only if my video edit ing was decent

This is one example of what I get for results...

That's just a play through of a pedal that I am demoing. It was REALLY loud in the room.

Sorry to keep posting about the iRig pre here, but this thing is so cool. I ran a cable from my presonus line out directly into the iRig Pre last night, and it worked flawlessly. This was using an the stock NadIR V30 IR. Silent recording right into my phone.

Thanks again Bad.Seed for your input. Ultimately I went with the Zoom Q2N4K mostly due to reasons below that DBN and PDC are talking about. It should be here tomorrow. I feel like with the Zoom and it's form factor I will be able to use it for other things besides guitar.

That and I can't trust my Blackberry/Android to support the iRig. I mean, I see there is a list of phones and if I had a Samsung 10 or whatever it might be a bit different but I think I would still be limited to just recording guitar.

So have you used the Q8 enough to say that it justifies the price WITHOUT the external mic capability in consideration? The ext mic capability would justify it alone, just wondering how the video/audio compares. Not a lot out there yet on this one.

Thanks again for all the feedback.

Sounds amazing

Tascam DR-44WL - sound quality is amazing. No video though so you'd have to sync if you wanted video as well.

iPhones do a pretty damn good job all by themselves, too

I wouldn't say the price is justified for my needs strictly based on the video quality, because I don't need great video quality. What sold me was the two mic inputs plus almost a decade of good experiences with the Q2. If all I needed were the internal mics and decent video I would've tried to find something in the $200 range.

As far as the audio quality of the built in mics on the Q8, I haven't used it enough to say if they are superior to my Q2.

^Cool tones Trashed but I can barely hear you (your voice I mean) even with all my volumes maxed out?

The mic was at - 20dB, I didn't change it for my voice. I think that is the only video I have spoke on.

Keep in mind, 1 shot through and no editing. If I was good with video editing I would add talking parts. The amp was really fucking loud in there.

The good thing about what I have is that it's stupid easy to use with no editing.

Your posts and vids make me wish I would've bought another iRig pre to replace the defective one I had.

I think I blew mine up last night by trying to run a mixer line out into it and clipping the bullshit out of it. Seems to work for low level signals but completely takes a dump when I put it on a guitar cab.

Will report back today when I try to take some clips of my new arrival.

iRig Pre or TC Vocal GO.

Both plug into your headphone jack and allow you to plug an actual mix directly into your phone, and defeats your internal phone mic.

Here's an example of my using the iRig Pre with an sm57

When using the iRig do you record through an app or just direct onto your iphone?

I'm using a galaxy s10, but it's straight into the phone through the standard camera app

That's a really good question, because it's not addressed too well in the manual. I initially thought I HAD to use the iRig app to record, then got frustrated because there are at least 3 of them out there and lot of negative reviews. Also, there is no video with the iRig apps that I am familiar with, audio only and the default settings clip like mad at the volumes I play.

It's just a matter of plugging the iRig into the phone which will disable the phone's audio recorder, then use the camera option on the phone.

^ nothing wrong with your clips brother

Got the Q2 in the other day. Unfortunately, the only thing I've done with it so far is record a short video for Dunlop to get some help trouble shooting my MXR A/B pedal. I think I have a ground loop all of the sudden :(

Can't wait to put it through the proper paces though. I think I read on GGF that I may need a codec converter. Was that you DBN? I have Windows 10 with no special video editing stuff. What do I need my friend?

If anyone has an older iPhone laying around and wants to mess with an iRig, I found mine in a box. Also found my Tascam IM2 condenser mic I used with my iphone 4. It was actually a pretty cool little rig to record and write with when traveling. Would be good for recording clips with an old phone/Ipad. If anyone thinks they can use it, PM me and i'll send it to you free.

^ Nice gesture there sutepaj.
Remind me to ask you how you flipped your name like that.

So I got the Zoom Q2n4K

I have not even read the instructions or looked at any tutorials.

The Good News? I didn't have too.

I literally turned it on and quickly pressed a few hard buttons on the outside, made some quick decisions/selections and pressed Play. Pulled the card out, stuck in my laptop and uploaded it to Youtube. Now that's what I'm talking about. It felt like zero effort. The days of micing up the Shure, the UX1 and Audacity and everything else are over.

This was just the first one I did - again, no tweaking, no learning, no adjusting. I mean it should just get better right? I mean there is a little clipping.

Hey there...

What are you using for your In-Room recordings particularly with video?

I don't want to synch an audio and video file.
My android phone (Blackberry KeyOne) sucks at recording high gain amps.
Not buying an apple phone.

I've seen some great videos from some of you using just your Apple phone. I'm not buying an Apple phone but let me know if you are plugging in an external mic. So far, I've been doing the SM57+Line 6 UX1 but it is not convenient. I'm looking for something more for on the fly recording of riff ideas. I come up with stuff that I like but then the next day I can't remember what it was.

Looking at the Zoom Q2N 4K at the moment. $219. One audio and video file and not much bigger than a GoPro. https://www.guitarcenter.com/Zoom/Q2n-4 ... m&index=49

Help

I have the Q2N 4k. On board stereo mics sound good, and with the correct cable you can hook up a SM 58 or something and mic your cab if you want. It's a pretty simple but versatile unit. The only real drawback is the battery situation. It uses two AA batteries and sucks them dry in no time. I use an external USB battery.
