what's the best sounding mesa dual rec?

I owned a 2010 Dual Recto for a month or two and my favorite aspect of it was really the clean channel's pushed mode. It just sounded perfect for that classic rock sound with my Tubescreamer in front. The Orange channel was a bit too fat, as I think all or most Mesa crunch sounds are. The Red channel modern was really really good, but it had to be punching your walls with an iron dick before it sounded 'right' and for some reason I think it sounded a little more 'midrangey' compared to the older Recs. Not as fat and lax in the mids I think. Could be the way that I had it dialed though and I only had it for a little while, but it made me curious to try one of the older models because those are the Recs that I've been listening to on Death Metal tracks from over the years. Overall it was a really fun amp to play and own though and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone who isn't afraid to sit in front of their amp and contemplate which settings sound best.

I did some clips with it although they're pretty junk tbh. Just put my handle into netmusicians.org and go to page 2 for the Recto clips.

that's just about all i do when i turn my TSL on - sit there and mess with it lol. my clips are kind of off too - i just recorded them really quick with a br1600 that i had for awhile and didnt really know how to use lol.

and I just remembered, Listen to cannibal corpse evisceration plague if you want to hear the really low tuned chug death metal on a recto.

Having played several early two channels and the new 2010 recto, I honestly can say that my Friedman modded 3 channel takes the win. It just has this tightness and clarity that the stock ones don't have, and it growls like no other. My clips don't do it justice, but they're just from my Sony camcorder. I'll be tracking with it later this year hopefully in a professional environment.

one word: TREMOVERB!!!!

i am definitely going to have to try one of these.

with a bad monkey up front...

that sounds fuckin great!

and i checked out some of fearedse's stuff on youtube - that guy's got some great riffs!
but i'll be damned if almost - ALMOST - everything i've heard - and im not trying to be a douche here lol - but seriously just about everything i've been listening to i can cop or come damn close to it with my FJA TSL. no shit. this just can't be possible it's a TSL - the bastard child of marshall tube amps lol
everything i mean as far as "metal tones".
i dunno man maybe i was just having a bad day the last time i played it with some volume (im staying in an apt through the week for work right now and can't crank it)
i watched a couple of roadster clips that sounded different in a good way that i would be interested in - kind of a little "darker" sound - but everything else was something i could get close to.
im starting to think i need to just get a DSL100 - because they're just about the same amp that i have now, but popular opinion is they sound "a little better" - and send it off to FJA and put some really nice tubes in it.
either that or just break down and buy a 3+se pre amp and start saving for a power amp lol

Actually I've heard the DSL and TSL amps come under fire because some people saw it as Marshall's way of competing with Mesa. If that is true then it wouldn't surprise me that you could dial in a sound that is close to a Recto sort of sound. A Rectifier is NOTHING like a true Marshall sound. Buy one and find out for yourself. You may love it, you may hate it, they're not for everybody.

well my TSL's FJA modded with a mercury magnetics OT and choke and the "metal mod", and since it's been 4 or so years since i sent it off - i remember vaguely it had a pretty weak high gain when it was stock.
i think it's best sound is your typical zeppelin "LP into a marshall" low/mid gain sound, but shit man - i never really looked into comparing it to so many other amps.
FJA DSL100 has to be the way to go. more glass = more tone lol
im gonna have to get out and try some of these amps in real life to be sure.

A Marshall is NOTHING like a True Rectifier sound. ;)
I own and love both tones, (Splawn Quickrod/2010 Dual Recto)
I play them in a stereo setup and they compliment each other extremely WELL!!!
I was very surprised with the results.

To the OP, look at the Splawn Nitro or the
Bogner Uberschall Revision Blue or Twin Jet.
IMO, those will pack a HUGE tone that will Rock
well with your modded TSL.

Unfortunately there is NO best sounding Dual Rec. Some eras are more consistent than others but its really a personal thing. One example I can give from experience is way back in the day when the Rectos were just about hitting the scene, I had hooked up with Mesa and had a chance to deal direct with them when they had a place in Rockaway NY. Mark Snyder had done some work for me and he was running the place at the time. When I picked out my Dual Rec, I got to choose from about 13-15 heads with most of them having serial #'s below 100, and only 2 over 500. There were black/silver, silver/black, black/black and silver/silver with both types of tolex grains on the headshell. Some heads sounded better than others and some were absolutely garbage. To be fair we used the same tubes and the same cab after our initial demos. Some blackfaces sounded better than other and the same with the Silver. At that time the silverfaces were a bit rarer than the blacks, but by no means was there any differences in build. As far as matching headshells, that didnt matter cause there was ALOT of headshell swapping going on if thats what guys wanted. So yea, there may be a possibility that your old black/black Dual Rec. may not have started out that way. :D
Go out and try as many Duals as you can find and judge for yourself. I know its kind of a lame answer but honestly, thats the only way yer gonna find the "best sounding" one.

I just played one of the 2010 Rectos and WOW, It was by far the best recto I've played.

and I've owned damn near all of them but the Racktifier and Road King.

Agree .... this is also true of every amp ever built. They are like snowflakes .... every one of them is different and what one fits you best may not be the best for others.
