My vote: Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out 2009 re-master by the Rolling Stones!

Les Pauls, SGs, 335s, all through loud over-driven Ampegs! The band is great- Just the right amount of sloppy tightness. I think this album is what made them "The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World!"

The remastered version sounds great, and it has sets by a young B. B. King and Tina Turner. Great sets! BB just has that sweet snap and snarl. A Tourmaster will get that, but I am not sure about that "fill-Madsion-Square-Garden-Humungulous-Ampeg-Amp-Driven-To-The-Ends-Of-The-Earth-Ampeg" sound.

You should all check out the 2009 re-master of this- Great guitar sounds!

So, what's your vote?

Rock on dudes!

Heard of this record, but never heard it. What's the sound like? I guess it is worth getting, huh?

:D

I'll have to go a little left of center and go with Queen's Live Killers double album from 1979. Brian May at his best, especially the version of Brighton Rock. Outstanding production quality also - sounds better than some of their studio albums from the same era.

For me it's probably The Allman Bros Live at Fillmore East...Get your Ya Ya's out is right there as well.....Mick Taylor's style and tone are very similar to mine...LOVE that sound!! VERY achievable with the Tourmaster using Scumback greenback type speakers

Yeah, Live at the Fillmore East is a great one.

I don't know about that tone, though. I don't think those old Ampegs had gain/master volume setups. I think you had to just crank them up to get that sound, and I think it makes a difference.

What were the Allmans using- Marshalls?

Yea I agree, I thought this one too. But ultimately I would have to go with Allman Brother Live at the Filmore East.

Hey man nice to meet you the other day!!! It was fun hanging out. I did not catch your name, sorry. I hope I catch you down at Jason's store again soon. GREAT PLACE to buy gear.

Seriously- You guys should check out the re-mastered Get Yer Ya Yas Out. Great guitar tones on that!

Hi Len...Yes, the Ampeg VT series had no master volumes....I used to use them as well, but you had to turn up the volume to 1 or 2 o'clock to get them to sing, but they were Ungodly loud.....I did a concert with West/Bruce and Laing and the Free, and my 2, 2/12 VT'22's were louder than Leslie Wests 4 Marshalls and Paul Kosseff's 3 Marshalls....I also used Altec Lansing speakers......For live, big concert stuff, the Ampeg's were incredible....The sound systems back then ...1970...were so bad, you had to have loud amps to get to your audience
As far as the Allman Bros amps go, Duane used to use 1 or 2 50 watt Marshalls...Dickey used a 100 watter with JBL speakers.....Those speakers made them spikier sounding than Greenbacks
One of the many things I like about the Egnater amps is that you can get that type of sound at more reasonable volume levels

Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous
UFO - Strangers in the Night
AC/DC - If You Want Blood (You've Got It)

Hello
I have to say the albums chosen so far are really all outstanding  . I have everything mentioned so far and my wife has live Mayer that I am going to listen to. My most listen to live album to this day is still Who Live At Leeds. I just love the tone of those Hiwatts cranked up like they were. I will say that seeing that performance on dvd has swayed my opinion a little because when watching the dvd you see the interaction between the bandmates that went on during the performance and that just blew me away. I hope to see some suggestions here that I have'nt heard (like John Mayer) I am looking forwood to discovering some new/old performances.

J. Geils Band Live Full House has always been one of my favorite live albums. I don't think it's the best per say, but it came to mind when I read the thread.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Eric Johnson's Live from Austin TX. It's a great "all guitar all the time" album, and he's always had very "special" tone to my ears. Very organic, but very refined at the same time.

I'd forgotten about Live at Leeds- That's a great one! Particularly for that lead/rhythym style of playing Townshend has. What amps was he using? I'm not sure it Marshalls- Hiwatts, or Traynors, or something like that.

Definitely have to say the Eric Johnson live at Austin City Limits would be my vote for sure too!!! :)

He was amazing that night!!! Well..every night he is though....

Another great live EJ album is Alien Love Child too.

and Yes. Another really freat live album is The Scorpions Tokyo Tapes. Uli John Roth is just fantastic on that and thier material was so much better in teh old days. Really good stuff, although listening to it the otehr day I have to say I don't know how "live" it really is. Sounds touched up. UFO Strangers in the Night is awesome too, good call Mr. Dorklift.

Hiwatts all the way! Pete's use of his volume pot is dynamic and the rest of the band plays off of it. If you watch the dvd you will see this. It blows me away that he seems to control the entire band with his use of volume . They watch his every move for clues as to where he is going next. Truly magical. I see a few more albums I have'nt heard yet. Looks like I have some music purchases happening soon :D. BTW Are we showing our collective ages by refering to these performances as "albums"
