I'd forgotten about Live at Leeds- That's a great one! Particularly for that lead/rhythym style of playing Townshend has. What amps was he using? I'm not sure it Marshalls- Hiwatts, or Traynors, or something like that.

Hiwatts all the way! Pete's use of his volume pot is dynamic and the rest of the band plays off of it. If you watch the dvd you will see this. It blows me away that he seems to control the entire band with his use of volume . They watch his every move as a clue to where he is going next. Truly magical. I see a few more albums I have'nt heard yet. Looks like I have some music purchases happening soon :D. BTW Are we showing our collective ages by refering to these performances as "albums"

Nah ;)

Funny thing is...I'm 31....and I still say when I'm recording...stuff like "that's great tones to going to tape..." even though...I go to a hard drive instead of tape! :) Old habits die hard!

FTMP, I hate live albums, BUT..........................

the winners are:

Portishead - Live in New York

Pink Floyd - Pulse

Both of these DVD's/albums floor me. So polished and perfected.

My bass player pointed out that I was saying the same during a recent recording (digital) session. i guess that's how we roll :D

There's something about guitar tones going to tape ....It's really part of the tone....But I use a hard drive as well....

Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous

This + infinity!!!

Thin Lizzy is THE most underrated classic rock band in the history of the universe

Live and Dangerous is one of those deserted island must haves or else your Rock Card gets revoked.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Not sure if this qualifies, but Van Halen's Oakland '81 video.

They played Hear About it Later, Unchained & So This Is Love? - Masters at the top of their game in my opinion.

Also, not album, but Joe Satriani's live version of "Memories" on the Dreaming #11 EP is amazing. Also, his "Flying In a Blue Dream" performance on Time Machine. I wore those records out.

But for album's sake, I will go with whoever said SRV - El Mocambo. Tone, Tone, Tone and a wicked performance to boot. I would HATE to follow anything like that performance.

Gotta add: B. B. King, either Live at The Regal, or Live at Cook County Jail. Not rock exactly, but what a sound!

My vote in two categores:

1) Just pure live microphone in the room rock: Rory Gallagher Live In Europe

This video is not from Live in Europe, but is signifies why live Rory is really tough to beat.
I'm not sure I've seen anybody match the "immediacy" with which he connects to the crowd.

2) Polished and mastered to near studio level: Definitely P.U.L.S.E. Pink Floyd.

Of course not everybody goes to concerts looking for the same thing,
but I've always thought that if there was ever a show where people got their
money's worth it would have to be that:

It would be hard to experience that and say, "boy I was just looking for a little more tonight."

And from the personal angle only - nothing will ever beat this for me:

Interesting on some of the older albums... There is a similar thread going on. Those older amps- You just had to crank them up, and I think in some either deep psychological way, or in some in your face way, NOT having a gain/master volume setup made a difference. Just crank that fucker up LOUD! In that sense I don't think that today's amps quite get what you got when you just cranked 10 old Ampegs up loud enough to fill Madison Sqaure Garden.

The other thread said that tone comes from the pre-amp, but feel comes from the power amp. Maybe that is what I am sensing in the tones from Get Yer Ya Yas Out- Just plain old LOUD!!

Wow Len. Those last two posts kinda reminded me of "Being John Malcovic"

WOW!! Killer slide from RORY! Is that a Melody Maker? Nice thick tone. Even with a single coil.

I don't know how I ended up with two posts there. I tried to just edit the one.

I never saw the movie. What's the connection?

I know he owned a Melody Maker but I'm not familiar enough with it to say for sure.

This my all time favorite slide by Rory - check out the reach in to the back pocket at 2:25 - Old School!

The correct answer is KISS ALIVE. Personally I like Live at Leeds better.

Hey! I'm new here, but just had to chime in. Gov't Mule - Live With a Little Help From Our Friends has got to be one of my favorites. Lots of great musicians and tons of killer tone.
