They're like Engl Powerballs. They can do a killer rhythm but that can't do leads.

Different strokes for different folks.

I've owned several versions of both, modded and stock and I like both equally.
For pure brutal metal with no effects i'd go with the super saturated lead channel of the 6505/5150, the rhy. channel with boost is also tits.

A boosted rectifier holds it's own against any high gain amp and has a much better clean channel than the peavey.

I dunno. I've played both... They're great metal amps. They sound different, but they're both equally adept at metal.

FWIW I had to put a choke in my 5150 before I really liked it. Once I did that, it was my favorite amp. I think the 5150/6505 is one of the best metal amps out there.

That said, I've really taken a liking to my guitarist's Triple Rec. It is definately an equal in the brutal department. To each their own, though.

Both are great, i like the recto with a boost better than the peavey

A boosted Recto is much more versatile and half as noisy as a 6505. Love the 6505 but it only does one thing really well.

I just remembered an article I read a while ago about the 5 best metal amps. Just dug up the link:

http://gear-vault.com/top-5-amps-peavey-5150-6505/

5) 6505/5150
4) Rivera Knucklehead K-Tre
3) Mesa Recto
2) Bogner Uberschall
1) Marshall JCM800

Sorry.

I think they put the Marshall at #1 because of its "classic" status.

I agree. If you talk about all time metal, no doubt. But I see a lot more 5150/6505 heads these days. It's like every other hardcore band I see has one.

What's better? 5150 and a Mesa Dual Rectifier combined...

I have both and they both excel. They do sound similar but the Recto is a more mid scooped and more hi-fi. The 5150 don't have the low-lows and high-highs of the Recto, but has a more pronounced aggressive midrange.

Honestly one is high mids focused and the other is low mids focused with emphasis on high end. Two circuits based originally on the SLO yet still sound different and have different attitudes. You cannot go wrong with each, it all depends on the tone you're searching for.

I have worked to own both. I originally owned a 5150 II, then a 5150 II and a 5150 block letter, off'ed the block letter, and now 6 years later purchased a dual rectifier to dual track rhythms with the 5150 II, but the 5150 IIwill keep solo duties as the top end is more pleasant to my ears.

i've owned many revisions of both and i'd go boosted recto for sure, and the new recto is the best imo. I have a good friend who swears by his 6505+, but everytime I bring a recto over he spends the whole time trying to dial his damn amp when he hears the recto. Funny thing is I still love my peaveys, and hope to find another sig model. Both are really kick ass for metal. Both sound best with a v30 cab imo. Peavey is half the price, also I felt my 5150 sig sounded best compared to the other revisions, just sounded more aggressive and pissed off, and the new recto sounds less muddy and also more bright compared to the other revisions. All opinions though. Check out Ola Englund, has good clips of both, dialed how he likes them, so you can get a good comparison.

The Rec can do a lot more than just metal, whereas the 5150 does one sound. The Rec has better cleans, better mid gain tones, etc.

I sold a triple recto to get a 5150II. it just felt tighter, with a faster attack and more in your face than the recto. haven't heard the 6505 but I'm assuming it's similar. I preferred the peavey but the rectos do have some really evil harmonic overtone to the sound that I haven't heard any other amp do (see brujeria).
