which is better for metal peavey 6505 or mesa dual rectifier

This is totally the pie vs. cake argument. I had a 6505+ until a couple of weeks ago. I sold it and kept my Recto. But that's not because it is better, rather because it's better for me. It is the sound I want.

Oh, and cake owns pie any day. Except pumpkin.

I sold a triple recto to get a 5150II. it just felt tighter, with a faster attack and more in your face than the recto. haven't heard the 6505 but I'm assuming it's similar. I preferred the peavey but the rectos do have some really evil harmonic overtone to the sound that I haven't heard any other amp do (see brujeria).

5150 = 6505
5152 = 6505+

But there really isn't an answer to better. Apples and oranges.

IMHO if you want the best tone, use both. Double track your guitars with 1 of each amp, they sit nice in mixes together because one is lower mid focus and the other is more in the middle of the mid range (if that makes sense)

When it comes to what sounds better? i think the player will always decide how that ends for the listener.

I have to say one of the fullest, striking sounds I ever heard was during a jam session, a valvestate half-stack on one side, and a dual rectifier half stack on the other playing for those about to rock. there was some kind of uncommon synergy it just sounded incredibly huge.

I had both the FJA Modded 5150 and the FJA modded Mesa....both freaking killed.
Jut preffered the Mesa tone for what I want.

obviously im a 5150 owner, and so far, i LOVE this amp.....so my vote goes to the 5150. i've played a few rectos and never seemed to be able to mesh with them, but in all fairness, never got to spend a shit ton of time with one... i plan to though...

Yeah, my 5152 has been "my amp" pretty much since it was released. So i lean more toward that. Mesa's sound insane when someone else plays them, that "sag" never feels right to me. But in my old band that was the combo, 5150 with me and dual rec for my other guitarist, we were just a wall of sonic death. I miss those days.

Owned and played (live and studio) both...Two of my all time favorites. But if I was in a metal band and could own ONLY one...I would go with the 5150 II/6505+.

Ive had a 5150,5150 II , 6505 and 6505II a dual a tripple and a roadster. I just have the roadster now all are great for metal. I just perfered th roadster more for its darker side and versitilty. In my opinion you dont need to boost it just takes a good amount of time to tweak a very hard one to dial it in but once done it does sound heavenly. Just my two cents worth. But if you do want to boost i have found that the lovepedal eternity works best for me.

Running the gain lower on the head, and on the OD running the gain off and the level cranked tightens up the amp tremendously.

FWIW I had to put a choke in my 5150 before I really liked it. Once I did that, it was my favorite amp. I think the 5150/6505 is one of the best metal amps out there.

That said, I've really taken a liking to my guitarist's Triple Rec. It is definately an equal in the brutal department. To each their own, though.

Indeed. The amp that I've owned the longest, the amp that has given me not a moment's issue, despite being dragged around, used as an ashtray/beer holder, left in freezing vans for a week, a FLOOD for fucks sake where it got wet...my Triple Rec.

In any event, I love the 5150 amps...have owned every version (of the 5150s) and still miss my 5150 combo, which was for some reason, the amp with THE most sustain and easy to play distortion ever. Had it not weighed 10,500,000 lbs I'd probably still have it today.

However, the big Mesa amps are the overlord of consistent, heavy, vibrate your balls tone in the right situation. But by themselves, at low volume they are pretty horrid.

Both amps are great in the right application.
