I feel like Killswitch Engage is responsible for all the metal nooblets copying their “tone secret” after EOH was released. What a load of shit. How about learning proper gain staging.

I suppose most can get away with blasting a traditional TS circuit since there’s not many dB’s on tap but I laugh at ell the dumbass lemmings like Tone Wars dude who will crank a modern OD/boost pedal that has 30+ dB of volume boost with amp gain halfway or more.

I think that approach is not a bad starting point, but not what I do. With the Klon I like the volume at 12:30-1:00, tone 1-2:00, gain 9:30-10:00. It depends so much on the pedal used

Nah, this was a common practice in studios throughout the 90s especially for rectos, but also with 800s

I was surprised to learn recently that Zakk runs his OD with all three controls maxed.

People had been running bosts like this for decades before KSE.
I know that. Rangemaster, Schaffer Vega wireless, etc etc. since the late 60’s and 70’s. I’m just talking about the settings in my thread title.

Yes, those settings have been common long before killswitch engage - When I started getting into bands and studios in the 90s it was already ubiquitous, so I'm sure it predates even that, let alone KSE

it kind of makes sense. With an amp already adding gain, hit the amp input with a hot signal to push the preamp, and add only enough pedal drive to grease it up a bit.

I picked it up from a Jake E Lee interview in some magazine back in the 80’s. After getting my first SD-1 in ‘85.

Never heard the KSE story, I think this is kind of like the wheel, it's just been there forever no one knows. Probably the first person to use an OD.

I didn't know about this but I wouldn't be surprised at all - this was already regarded as "old hat" when I started doing music stuff, certainly well before killswitch engage existed
I normally have the drive up just a tiny bit. But basically level on ten, tone in the middle and drive just cracked. It was always annoying turning it off and having all this bass and then stepping on it and it all going away. Had to mod it to not do that.
